I was in the Porterhouse last night and I tried their new dunkel Beer "Phd".
I was mightily impressed with it.
Can you recommend a good dunkel available in off licences?
I feel like a dunkel tonight!

    Thanks in advance!

Ps is Budweiser Budwar Dark Lager a dunkel in all but name?
and where can I get it?

Depends who you're talking to :) It's Czech, and dunkel is a German style. Strictly speaking, dark Czech beers shouldn't be classed as dunkels or schwarzbiers, but they often are in the English and German-speaking worlds because they hit a lot of the same buttons.

You can't, AFAIK. the importer stopped importing it to Ireland a couple of years back.

I'm a fan of BrewDog's Zeitgeist. Augustiner Dunkel is quality. I'd skip any of the dunkel weissbiers: they're almost always disappointing, I find.

Readily available in Ireland. Most off licenses will have stock of it.

BeerNut is correct. Noreast Beers did stop Importing it because it was not received well on the Irish Market. It's possible you might find it somewhere in Ireland, brought in in small quantities from the UK or so, but Noreast, being the agents, will not be bringing it back to the market anytime soon.

I liked the Arcobrau Dunkel, got in Tesco as part of the 5 for a tenner deal recently

It's on offer in Dunnes at the moment, I've seen it in tesco and pretty much every other off licence as well.

Another vote here for Brewdog Zeitgeist. Not sure about their availability in Ireland, but other dark lagers that I've tried and found very enjoyable are:

    Kostritzer Schwarzbier
    Bernard Dark
    Primator Dark

You could also try any of the German doppelbock / "-ator" lagers if you come across them. Paulaner Salvator is well worth a taste, drinkstore have it.

    +1 for Arcobrau Dunkel

I wish there were more dunkels available. Had a few in Berlin a few weeks ago and were absolutely delicious.

I saw the dark version of Krombacher in Tesco recently. Not bad, and part of the 5 for 10 interesting beers deal
