Remember the hullaballo when the learner permits came in that there'd be fines starting at a minimum of 1000Euro ?
Well, it seems that was a mistake in a press release that has since become common knowledge, but it factually incorrect.

If you look at the text of the Road Traffic Acts or the (more readable) RSA website on learner permits you will see that its an absolute MAXIMUM of 1000 euro fine for a first offence, to be decided by the mood of the judge on the day.
If you put on a sad face you may get away with throwing a tenner in the vincent de paul box and have no conviction.
A far cry from a starting point of minimum fine of 1000Euro !

Just mentioning this as its always a topic that comes up with people balancing up the risks of getting caught.
According to the law of the land, the fine isnt as bad as initially was publicised so to those looking to risk it they have less to fear than they may have thought

Failure to display L plates would also result in an additional fine of up to 1000.

Still potentially a lot of cash.

I don't think you should really be encouraging new drivers to break the road laws....

Out of interest does anyone know if they take the car off you if they decide to charge you? Or can you drive away with it?

I think it's a case of you have to park the car and walk home ... not sure though.
