Does anyone have any recommendations for any particular brand of DVD to use for archiving my pictures?

Have been using philips dvds for a few years now and have had no problems with them, Especially if they are to be written to and stored.

Thanks for that. Yes, it would be a write and store situation. It's something I already do and when I had to rely on it after discovering that I'd accidentally deleted 50 or so images from late 2007, I'm glad to say that my system worked, but I'm just using cheap DVDs.

Is there any advantage to the gold and 'Archival' ones I've seen on Amazon?

In my humble opinion it's way better to invest in proper hard drive based backup system with RAID (NAS).
After few years archiving your data on DVDs you will have huge data bank, but you will have to make additional copies to make sure that each and every disk is safe from any errors.
If you will use hard drives in RAID setup, you will be more safer and they're easier to maintain and to manage.
