Just thought might be a good idea to debate about limericks pub scene see what peopels take on pubs drinks, venue, staff, bouncers and crowds. Mods you can delete this if you feel its not right for the section. So with limerick night scene very up and down and now new bars opening do you think they will last or more will open and long serving ones close down?Ive heard stories of the libary stopping people in there late 20s and 30s as they only want a young crowd.I was in the orchard for sunday drinks its a nice venue the way they have done it.im not a lover of nancys just not my crowd ive been going smyths/icon years but will try new bars when they open to see what there like.Out all the bars ive heard smyths by a mile the worst to work for aswell.

So what bars do you like? any horror stories about bars or staff be interesting to see what people think of the pub scene in limerick!

Nancys is good until it gets too packed, then its horrible, Smyths is soulless, Flannerys on the same street can either be really good or really crap its a weird place, can never tell if its going to be fun or not.

There are some quite nice bars in Derry. Discussion for another thread though.

oh trolly troll wants to troll, I see now.

I quite like flannerys on denmark street but i agree with the other poster you're never quite sure what you're gonna get in there. Recently i've taken a fondness towards austins by the train station, my da goes and i've been going with a few times and brought the lads with me a few times had great nights each time.

These threads usually end up with people criticising pubs because they can't get in or had a bad experience once in there. Its hard to get a peoper review of any pub. By nature some people like certain pubs and others hate the same pubs. Its all about taste I guess.
    And with that:
Nancy's - I like it, can get packed but at that stage I'm usually drunk enough not to care. Drink is horrendous though, aboslutely criminally bad

"Big" Flannery's Can take it or leave it, its a grand pub. Drink is ok in there.

Jerry Flannery's - Nice pub, drink is not bad, good smoking area.
Phil Flannery's - Nice pub, drink is not bad, good smoking area.

Office - Too many kids for my liking, younger crowd love it but that may change with running returning to original owner.Bands in their are not nearly as good as people make out. Drink can be good or bad depending on the night

Orchard - Was Doc's bar and will always be Doc's bar to me, I served my time in there many moons ago so not keen on the place. Drink is ok in there.

Library - Only been there once and crowd is too young for me, drink is not great in there.

Smyths - Typical busy city pub. Some ok bands in there, drink is on a parr with Nancy's, absolutely disgraceful.

Whelan's - The halcyon days of McDaids are well and truely gone, and name changes are not going to change that fact. Drink is not great, bands are not good.

Costellos - I'm not a student anymore and I don't like to drink out of cans. I can understand its appeal though as it caters for anyone who is sick of the usual pubs everyone goes to.

That's my lot as I'm not going through every pub in town.

Curragower, Fennessys, Reddans, Souths, Windmill, all good places if you want a quiet good pint. (Curragower maybe less so)

There was I all along thinking I had some alergic reaction to lager after Nancys and Smyths when I was getting a dose of the ****es!!

Costelloes is grand if you get chucked out of a pub at closing, and just strictly want liquor and fast! No frills. Straight in the door. "Whiskey!!!!!!!!!!"

Think Whelans is doomed. So many changes to pubs on that street......

    Anyway.

The Locke Bar is grand for an after work drink. Would not spend the entire night there though.

The Baily is hit and miss crowd wise.

Clohessy's again is hit and miss, I know it's a rugby bar but even on non rugby match days it can draw alot of posers in blazers.

Bentley's - was only every in there once and the drink was overpriced and not that nice.

I don't even know if the posers go to Clohessys anymore.... Nancys has an abundance of posers..... the hipsters go the mickey martins....

Gotta say I like bourkes and mickeys. Normally start in Phil flannerys though. Great spot.

Sextons is a great spot for a quiet pint.

O'Connell's is a nice spot too.

Smyths/Icon is gone to the dogs. The bouncers alone would put you off going there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

Few too many people off their heads in Bourkes these days, but it's grand other than that.....

You're still young enough to find the place a novelty! :P
It's really not a great club at all.

Yup, the bouncers in there have gotten so much worse. One of the assholes there said I had to cover up my tattoo before he would let me in. I suppose because a tattoo saying "All You Need Is Love" is oh so offensive

I do and have always hated it :P the comment was in relation to the many late night arguments between there and Costellos :P

@Sarah, told you so :) now, tell your boyfriend I love him and ill see him in Costellos :)

Has anyone had a bad experience in the bar at the George boutique hotel ? I saw the barman/duty manager behave really badly recently. The guy should not be serving the public. Its amazing how bars treat customers so rudely compared to other businesses. When you spend the amount of money you do in a bar elsewhere you would be treated with a lot more respect and common decency.

Mickeys is a great Pub for a pint and for a Pub without a doorman they have a great crowd.

Mickeys is the best in Limerick IMHO, love the place, chilled out, great music and nice clientele.

The crowd itself acts as a doorman. Was there one night and a guy threw a glass in through the window at the side where you can order drinks from the smoking area cos he couldn't get served and the barman came out and myself and about 5 or 6 lads helped get him out and away.

For the nights that you are going for "just a handy few" tom collins, bourkes or the locke.....for when those nights turn into more then the handy few expected....it varies on what night of the week it is....mon nights i would say smyths/icon as they are the only place with a band and a crowd....turn that to sat night and i would say jerry flannerys....nice crowd, good music and not too packed

I'm not a big fan of the likes of Flannerys on Denmark Street or Smyths. I find them fairly soulless places to be honest and the drink is mediocre. I like both Mickey's and Bourke's, the Guinness is decent in both, and they've a decent enough range of different beers as well. O'Connell's and The Locke also good enough places to start a night out.

If I'm going for quiet pints, I normally end down the other end of town, Reddan's, Bobby's, South's, Charlie Malone's. All spots where you can drink away and mind your own business and generally enjoy the company of whoever you're with. Of those, Malone's probably has the best pint. Bobby's is nice but the Guinness is fairly cold.

In fairness, Limerick is great for old man pints, quiet a few other spots with a lax enough approach to closing hours. Nothing better than a lock-in on a Friday night!

I think Nancys is full of old people..it's definately a bar for the older folk which is great..somewhere to go when I reach that age. It would never strike me as a pub that posers go to. Limerick doesn't have a poser scene in general. Dublin is the only place in the country that would come close to having bars that cater for posers like Krystle, The Morgan, Lillies etc. where bouncers will only let you in if you look good enough and wearing the right clothes. Limerick has a country town feel when out on a Saturday night which isn't a bad thing.

Quins closing meant Limerick's best pub was no more. Everywhere else is just a pretender to the throne. :(

    I miss Quins.

    I miss Quins.

Rose tinted glasses maybe? I always hear that Quinns was an amazing pub.

We get the same out our way when it comes to clubs. The generation before me have this grá for Fibber Magees out in Bunratty.
    - "Best nightclub ever" ~ Fergal 1992
    - "Finest women in the Midwest" ~ Michael 1994
    - "Best chipper van outside the door" ~ Joe 1995

The way I remember it was it a shithole, it was seriously rough and it was hard to get home from there.

The generation before that used to lambast Fibbers and say Poldarks out in the Two Mile Inn was a much superior club. I think it's all to do with your age, most people's best memories of socialising usually come from their early to mid twenties...well it is for me anyway. I could just about stick a nightclub back in my early to mid twenties, nowadays to get me into a club you'd have to do something akin to what the A-Team did to get B.A Baracus onto a plane.

Looking for a few recommendations please!

A group of 7 or 8 of us are heading to Limerick for the Ireland/Fiji rugby game in two weeks time and staying in town for the night. Usually if we're in Limerick it's for the Pig & Porter tag festival and we stick with the tag crowd in Clohessys, but wouldn't mind checking out a few different bars.

Looking for places with a good atmosphere, maybe a band or a bit of cheesy music - we're all youngsters of 30-35!

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,149 ✭✭✭✭Berty

    Cheese Princess,

I'd check out Mickey Martins, Bourkes Bar, Blind Ping and Nancy Blakes / Flannerys(Upper Denmark St) as they both have late licenses instead of a club. Clubbing, if you must, I would probably go to The Sin Bin because The Icon and Angel Lane are cattle marts for 18+ year old(but 16/17+ in reality).

Cheesy Music though. Dunno to be honest. There would be live Music in the Blind Pig, Bourkes and probably Flannerys.
