The UK Championship is no longer the second biggest event on the snooker calendar. This Sunday the International Championship kicks off in China and with a £125,000 winners cheque on offer plus full ranking points the field for this event is as good as we've had this season. Ronnie O'Sullivan makes his long awaited return to a full ranking event whilst Stephen Lee remains banned pending an investigation into betting irregularities.

The action begins on Sunday with the wild card round where both Ken Doherty and Fergal O'Brien begin their tournament.

Live television coverage will be provided by Eurosport.

Here's the World Snooker link with all the details......

O'Sullivan performed in front of a packed house in Liverpool last night, where he beat Jimmy White 5-4 in an exhibition match.

How long before Hearn loses the rag and hitches his wagon to Judd?

I'm a little bit surprised alright but then again it is O'Sullivan we're talking about here.
Still there is a full field out there in Chengdu for the tournament, i just guess we had better get used to not seeing O'Sullivan playing much snooker in the future.

Unfortunately we've lost Ken already who lost to Zhao Xintong (wildcard) this morning. Higginson got completely thrashed, a shadow of his form last season.

    6) Cao Yupeng 6-5 Wang Yuchen
    13) Shaun Murphy 6-0 Andrew Higginson
    1) Michael White v Lu Haotian
    2) Ken Doherty 5-6 Zhao Xintong

Fergal O'Brien is up in about a half hours time:
    12) Neil Robertson v Ryan Day
    5) Aditya Mehta v Zhu Yinghui
    4) Fergal O'Brien v Chen Feilong
    7) Jamie Burnett v Niu Zhuang

Fergal won convincingly 6-3 and plays Trump in the next round.

wasnt too surprised tbh, ronnie tends to pull out of these events as he pulled out a lot of times of the china open. this event used to be known as the grand prix so if it were still here , in the uk then ronnie would play in it.

john higgins going out is one of the biggest upsets so far going down to
Cao Yupeng, yupeng kept his nerve really well

The World Open replaced the Grand Prix which in turn was replaced by the rescheduled Shanghai Masters and with only three UK based events out of the ten main ranking events it's hard to see if O'Sullivan will travel again to overseas events especially if he has pulled out of this one which is in effect the second biggest on the tour.

I think it would be an idea for the future if players could play against each from anywhere in the world via video link. For example one player in China v a player in England and balls reset after each shot or break useing still screen technology. So after lets say a 43 break the balls on the other table are removed and to be set the same as the balls on the other 43 break table before a player plays his shot. That way Ronnie would be much more up for competing and the travel expenses for most journey men players would be minimized to help keep them in the game.

thanks zack :) getting confused with the world open and international open. it means one less tournament on the beeb, used to look forward to the grand prix in october.

fergal going down 6-3 to trump, didnt see any of it unfortunately but i heard fergal had a few chances

You should patent ideas like this instead of recklessly throwing them out there on the internet where someone else will doubtless go with it, claim the credit and freeze you out.

Damn your right but i dont want the money i just want the credit.
An addition. Certain tournaments to be trialled with ball re-spotting by efficient boxing type ring girls to keep the viewing public satisfied by the slight delays.

Judd 7-1 up on ebdon so far, id say he will wrap this game up very soon. as for the other semi, very difficult to call, but im going for robbo to edge smurph. neil is on decent form atm having won in poland a few weeks back

Yup. He's been really consistent this season. Thoroughly deserves it.

Its his points from winning the UK last season which have him no 1, he only has a runner up spot so far this season.
Nice to see a new no 1 though, only the tenth player to hold that honour.

Hard to blame him.... Ebdon is the least entertaining player on the circuit at the moment... By a long way.

From Judd's Twitter a/c back in July:

How Peter ebdon is allowed to play that slow is a joke #Aussieopen

He show total disrespect for the game of the past where players were slower but for me the grinding, tactical games were more enthraling than potting machines, impatient at someone who has a different style of play...

    Close final so far...

This is a big frame, plenty of tactical play and small breaks. If Judd loses this one, Neil has the match in the bag.

//edit: just as I posted the above, Judd got in and cleared up. Game back on!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,133 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Good game today, though I only say the first 12 frames and the final one. Looked very close. Some very smart shots from Trump today I thought.
