Rent Scam Limerick

I know this type of thing has been mentioned before but just a heads up to all people looking to rent:

    http://www.limerickpost.ie/index.php/navigation-mainmenu-30/local-news/5060-city-rental-scam-alert.html

Basically, a guy advertised a flat for rent in Steamboat Quay on Daft, 2 people came along to view it and decided to take it, they paid a deposit of €950 cash in hand but when they went to move in a few days later, they were unable to gain access to the flat. It was found that the man who claimed to be the landlord was not the owner of the flat. Gardai say that it is not the first time this scam has been operated in relation to this particular apartment.

You'd think after the first time people were scammed that the owner or genuine letting agent would have changed the locks

Find an apartment that is not used in a wanted area.
Pick the lock, and put a new lock chamber in.
Put apartment on Daft using a pre-pay phone.
    Get multiple deposits.
Put old lock chamber into door.
    Vanish.

    ^^^

Why on earth would you bother to go back and put the oringinal locks back???
Would you not be taking an unneccesary risk of bumping into the mark, the real owner or possibly the fuzz?

Makes no sense to me. Jus take the deposits and vanish.

Couple of reasons, all to do, oddly, with not getting caught.

Always record the person accepting the money on the video feature of the mobile phone.

I am actually looking for a house to rent myself at the moment. I came across a house in the st.patrick's rd area of limerick city.

I am not going to be specific, as obviously, this guy could be legit and I dont want to be getting myself into trouble by wrongly accusing someone.

But, basically there is a house advertised for rent, the auctioneer on the property that was advertised, is down as an address in pallasgreen(which is the area mentioned in the post article about the scam pulled off by the man posing as an auctioneer). I did ring about viewing the house, he said he would ring me back to confirm a time for the following evening, he never did, i tried ringing again and he put me off for another week because the tenants are still in the house, which is very plausible.
My worry is, when I look at the advertisement now, the address for the auctioneer is changed to o'connell street, limerick, no mention of pallasgreen anymore!

Seems a bit suspicious to me!

If any boso came along to rent off me and tried video taping me I would change my mind and turn him away.

Any person who goes around videoing things is out looking for trouble. Like those clowns that get stopped by the Guards at a checkpoint and video it, then post it on you tube whinging about the rights.
Same with cycling nuts who have cameras strapped to their helmets. Contrary fcuckers looking for something to give out about.

And if any boso had a problem with having some evidence recorded that the deposit was paid I would turn away from them too.

If someone decided refund me my deposit because I wanted to take a photograph of him as part of his signature, I'd take a photo of him anyway, but also report him to the Gardai as a possible scam artist, as well as any other info such as his bank account details, car reg, height/build/etc.
