Trouble starting Golf

    Hi all,

    We have a 2004 1.4 FSI Golf that has given us a lot of trouble in recent weeks. Basically it became very difficult to start when warm, such as after turning off the engine at the petrol station. Then the "EPC" light started coming on, and eventually about two weeks ago, a complete shutdown.

    We have been in and out of the garage for a number of weeks. First, the mechanic did a lot of ECU work on it. He said the ECU has been tampered with previously and damage has been permanently done to it. There are still some software issues that he was able to work around and at this point there are no errors showing.

    Unfortunately, after working perfectly for about a week, the car stated getting difficult to start again, when warm. Today, it wouldn't start even when cold (my wife jump started it by pushing it down the driveway).

    The mechanic has suggested the relay may be the issue and we are currently trying to get our hands on one.

    Has anyone seen similiar issues, or suggestions on the likely causes.

    Is the mechanic a main dealer?

    No, actually ended up at his garage by accident. It packed in across the road. Unlike my local mechanic, electronics and software seem to be his thing. I've spoken to a few people who've used the garage and he is well regarded.

    TBH, can't really afford to head to a main dealer.
