Career retraining options for journalists

I'm aware this should strictly go in the jobs forum or something, but I'm hoping the mod will allow discussion here as many potentially useful contributors with media experience wouldn't visit there.

I'm approaching my mid-30s and working in general news for one of the UK-owned papers with over a decade's experience. As per the thread at the top of this page, it has been obvious for some time that there is going to be serious scaling back across the board in the Irish print media, with all the job losses that accompany it.

I enjoy my job, but I'm looking for something a little more stable and a little less specialised which will allow me to move abroad if necessary (marketing, something digital, etc). The obvious option, PR, doesn't interest me at all, at least not in the terms I generally see it applied here, i.e. pushing stories for clients.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can direct me to a career specialist in Dublin who would be able to inform me. Thanks.

At least you are happy with your job in the media sector.

I've found that agencies specializing in a particular industry can be a massive help with telling you straight out what you have to do to get where you want to be. So if you had an interest in Finance, IT, etc. it would be really worthwhile to get in touch with these agencies and literally pick up the phone and tell them where you are at and tell them you are looking for an entry type role and ask them for their advice.

I think you will find it extremely hard to find a really good career advisor who can advise you about careers across the board but if you do find someone please let us know!

Interesting topic, would say an awful lot of journalists of your age and younger, maybe most of them are thinking on the same lines. Am afraid I don't know what options would suit you. I've a friend who works in finance though, and he reckoned that I (who am in a not dissimilar position to yourself) wouldn't find it too hard to get a job at a fairly good level in that area. Says that once you've got a good third level education and have shown yourself to be able to work in a fairly demanding job for a good number of years you'll be okay, even though you're coming from a different sector.
