    PlayStation 'master key' leaked online

Crucial security information about the Sony PlayStation 3 has been leaked online, making it easier for users to play pirated games on the machine.

Unlocking games consoles is a common way for users to open up the system, but in the past, such efforts have been quickly thwarted.

This hack is equivalent to stealing a master key, say experts.

It comes as Sony heard that one of the mass lawsuits brought against it in the US had been dismissed by the judge.

    Uh oh.

Hopefully this isn't true, or at least greatly exaggerated.

Its true, there has been a 4.21cfw in circulation for almost a week now with 4.25ofw spoofing enabling PSN/SEN access too.
Its wide open once again, with the caveat that to update to this new CFW you need your PS3 to be on 3.55 or lower before you update.

It's be safe to assume anyone on 3.55 or lower anyway is more likely to be pirating than not? as far as I'm aware, new PS3's come with a later firmware that this?

Not for sure, I have not updated my PS3 since Jan; because I have not gone online with it since then.

The 'master key' for 4.21 has been floating around a while now, & has resulted in a 4.21cfw.

It should be trivial for Sony to detect modified consoles & deny access to SEN, why they don't is beyond me. They have the ability to run authentication checks, so why don't they? Surely at the most basic level, a cfw is extremely distinguishable from an ofw.

Anyway, people on 3.55cfw have the ability to play newer fw games by means of a patch, so this won't affect piracy any more or less than its already affected. The only difference is online use, & if cfw consoles are getting online, people only have Sony to blame for that.

You don't see Jtag/RGH consoles using XBL.

It's safe to assume that not everyone is interested in the ps3 for it's games
