Towns in the Netherlands are considering a proposal to heat cycle lanes to encourage greater use of bicycles in winter.

The scheme proposes to use geo-thermal energy to prevent ice forming.

The idea has been provisionally costed at 20-40,000 euros per kilometre (£26-52,000 per mile).

    €40,000 per km?

Ah sure, throw some sand on it. It'll be grand.

No need for the sand, that'd require manpower - sure they just leave the fallen leaves on the cycle tracks, kinda like a mulch, it insulates the ground just fine.

Fertiliser - you're only man for blowing things up and melting road ice!

Plus you get a reminder of the crazy, hazy days of winter when you fill your waterbottles from the tap at home.....

Even the Dutch, whose municipalities burn plastic and don't care about the dioxins, might jibe at the pollution, though.

Can they harness the power of the bikes to run the heating for the bikes?

40K per K sounds quite reasonable, I think.

What's the cost for a strip of paint and that red stuff they throw down here per kilometre? Maybe we could do a swap?

And we can't even get regular maintenance on the canal bike track as it is...
