Extortionate Import Duties.

Last week I received a shipment of a pair of shoes worth $140. Shipping on the invoice was stated as $7.99. It was actually a pair of shoes meant for someone in California, so I got the wrong shipment and the shipping was obviously cheaper than it would have been to Ireland.

I paid €42 on import duties.

Yesterday, I received the correct order, a pair of shoes worth $79 and shipping was free (for me) as it was a replacement pair.

I was shocked to see a fee of €44.84 (more expensive than the last pair) considering $79 works out at only €61.

In both cases, UPS had a fee of €14, this left €30 of VAT charges on a product worth €61 (+23% is only €15) so there's another €15 added on.

It turns out that because the package didn't have a price for shipping specified, they calculated the price based on the weight and worked it out as being €58 or so. This added another €15 or so, giving the total of €44.84

Out of curiosity, I asked what would happen if I got an item for under €22 (the price at which customs don't nab a delivery), but it was the same weight with no shipping fee stated. She said the same charges would then be applied, so I'm guessing another €15 for the shipping VAT and then €14 from UPS too?

Just thought it was very excessive considering the value of the goods themselves. The replacement pair were worth only €61 but ended up costing me €105 :(

A heads up for anyone thinking they are getting a good deal from outside the EU. I knew the charges were bad and the risks of ordering from outside the EU before I ordered, but I didn't know they did that with the shipping as well as €14 from UPS seems a bit excessive.

You can dispute their shipping cost that was added on though by showing them an invoice that states the shipping was actually free but it will require you to hassle them a bit and it takes a while.

Yeah, I got the number for revenue/customs (018122604) off UPS, for the sake of €15 it's probably not worth the hassle. As the shipping, although free for me, would have been paid for by UPS and there must have been a charge at some point for it, so if it was $40 or so, it could only be a refund of maybe €7 to me, again, not really worth pursuing :(
