Find out has the coil pack been changed. Liable to go around 80,000 miles.

what sort of money are they looking for? 100k miles is decent for a near 14 year old car!

Check the air filter has been changed. Also check the condition of the rubber hoses for leaks or that they haven't perished. Keep an eye on the coolant and temp on the dash, check the oil too.

Make sure the TB was done.
Coil packs tend to go but €60 DIY job to replace so not major. (The car will not rev smoothly if it's gone)
    When was the last service?
Check it for any accident damage.
    Check tyres
    Check for resprayed panels.

Out of interest how much is it?

First car? Have you checked insurance? I was quoted €6k for a 1.4 Puma!!

might be worth considering a yaris, only 1L, and probably no slower than the 1.4 in the ford...

The focus is fairly bullet proof once shes been given a check up by a mechanic. It doens't do a 1/4 mile in under 10s but won't let you down once you look after basic maintenance.

    That's mental money for a '99!

That should be costing about €750/€800 if it's decent.

    You'll get a '02 Facelift for about €1500/€1600.

ah yeah i know it is, i've no intention of paying more than €1000 for it and thats at a stretch!

That's a big stretch even at that. It would want to be very clean and everything checked out, changed etc. Ask for proof of the service and a breakdown of what was done. Look for evidence of accident damage, misaligned panells, different shades on the paint work (i.e bumper different shade to doors etc), rusty wheel arches (fold down the rear bench lift the carpet slightly and see if rust has come through). Unless the seller can confirm everything has been done then I would keep looking.

Arches, doors, scuttle panel replacement, TB, water pump even though it's not belt driven, and €1250?

G'way and ****e. I'd give you my 03 one for slightly more.

Just checking donedeal to see whats out there.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4056444

Around the same money for those. I'm sure there would be room to haggle, just think of a price and stick to it.

TBH I have a 02 focus 1.4. with 186,8500ish miles. Still on original clutch and it's been to the mechanics 5 times in the last 7 years. I've put 160,000 miles onto it in 7 years. Best most reliable car I've ever bought. one thing is my sis has the 1.6 version and it's far more economical that my 1.4. Spend max 950.

I checked on of them cars already on the motor tax website and it was only bought a month ago so its seems dodgy to me. Ah yeah the max i'll be paying it €950!

There is a very good write up on buying and selling cars on here. It should be stickied on the main forum. It would be a good idea to have a read of it as it tells you what to looks out for.

Hey just thought id give ye an update! :) went to view the car today and agreed a price of €1000. The car was in great condition, just serviced, great wheels, the timing belt was done not so long ago and there's a nice CD player worth about €100 with it, so all in all i think its a fair price :)
Just want to say thanks to everyone who gave me feed back! :)
