Question about the medical card

Does anyone know for medical card users if its possible to be registered with different doctors in different areas, or do you have to stay with a GP in the same area ?

The reason I ask is because I move around a lot and if I got sick I would not want to go 5 miles accross town to see the doctor I'm registered with.

This is not possible. You can only be registered with one doctor, normally in the area closest to where you live.

The doctor is paid to look after you, so therefore you cannot register with multiple doctors, as only one doctor can be paid for your care, at any one time.

You can change doctors if you wish. Just get a new doctor to complete the relevant paperwork. This will mean that you cannot go to your old doctor.

If you move around a lot, and presuming you are Dublin based, a city centre based doctor suits best, as it is easy to get into the city centre, no matter where you are living in Dublin.

You can use your medical card for up to 3 months if you are living temporarily outside your Local Health Office area. In this case, you can attend any GP in the area participating in the medical card scheme. If you are going to be away longer than 3 months, you should apply to the Local Health Office of that area, for a medical card. If you move to a different part of your own Local Health Office area, you can apply to change your doctor.
