I sent a lens via registered post in a sturdy plastic container.

The buyer says the focus barrel is locked and jammed and is sending it back to me.

I have to refund him as ebay will side with him anyways.

Can I claim from An Post for the damage. Its 200 euros worth of a lens.

I had a look and it depends on the condition of the packaging

May be problematic as they seem to have the final word on value and viability .

    Has anyone ever claimed.

Do you know the serial no. of the lens you sent? If so, check it matches what comes back to you - could be a scam.....

Other thing is, did you insure it? If not then I don't think you'll get any joy from An Post.

I paid extra for postage . For tracking and signed for delivery . She asked the value when doing this.
Im not sure but I belive this type of post to be insured for damage.

    I hope it it.

I hope my lens is fixable.

God dam it anyway. Needed that money to fund my next camera.

I bet it got dropped when the buyer was opening it, and he is pulling a fast one on me.

Im powerless against this as far as I know. flee bay always side with buyers

Registered post is insured up to €320 within Ireland unless specifically requested to insure for higher (you pay more). If sent to the UK or other locations the max value of insurance drastically drops.

Did you ask the buyer to send a photo of the lens, packaging or anything before giving a refund?

    What lens was it?
Some could be more easily damaged by falls even when wrapped like the Canon 50mm f/1.4 which would slightly warp the focus barrel enough to jam it?

When you receive it check for any marks on the front of the lens to see if was dropped outside of packaging and I would be happy to examine it for you to see if it was caused outside of the packaging or not.

Also they may not side with him if he has any previous strikes to his record and I'm sure you can as him for photos showing damage if any (don't give any ground basically). If he is so willing to pay return postage back to you and isn't asking you to reimburse him I would say that is slightly fishy.
Then again it also could have been damaged in transit too so be careful.

Sorry to hear of your trouble.

    Its a 35mm prime.

I should have it SN on flicker exif.

I know it was in perfect condition when I packed it and used half a toilet roll for padding inside a thick plastic bottle . Even if ye tried to damage it inside all that, you would be lucky.

The buyer is 100% positive feedback on over 100 buys. He has not mentioned postage.

When I get it back I will update. I know how much these little lens go for and he was right on the money with it. I just hope I can fix this and get it up there on ebay again.

    Thanks zerohamster.

You'd be surprised at the battering things get in the post but if it was packed well enough to withstand someone using it as a bowling ball it should make it through ok ;)

don't forget buyers can't receive negative feedback on Ebay as a buyer (only when they sell things).
They can get strikes for various things such as non payment or other bad behaviour but I don't think they are visible to other users (three strikes and you're out I believe is the idea).

No prob, let us know how it goes.
