Im getting this for ever shot I took. All flash.

    Where did I go wrong?

All pics where had a 500 shutter speed and I just adjusted the f stop to expose according to the chart on the rear of the flash.

What's the sync speed on a zorki ? I'd say nowhere near 1/500. Shooting at the sync speed or slower is necessary using cameras with focal plane shutters, because it's only at that speed that the film gate is completely clear. At all higher speeds the second curtain starts travelling across the film plane before the 1st curtain has reached the far side.

A quick check on the hinternet suggests that the Zorki sync speed is 1/30  Also, there's probably some way of switching between X sync and bulb sync. Make sure it's set to X sync, otherwise your flash will fire too early.

How can I take flash photos with a 1/30 shutter speed?
The f/stop was around the smallest aperture at 500 standing 1.5 meters back.

    This camera. Grrrrrrr

Shutter speed doesn't make any difference to the flash end of the exposure (as long as it's a the sync speed or lower). Get slow enough and it'll start contributing to the ambient exposure, but if your'e shooting in conditions that need flash at the smallest aperture (by which I presume you mean f/16 or whatever) then the ambient exposure will be so slight as to make no difference. The flash is about 1/1000 of a second or something so it'll freeze the shot quite effectively.

    Thanks Daire.
I have alot to learn about exposure and proper photography by the looks of it.

I really wanted those pictures as it was a once a year reunion with my siblings:mad: .

Maybe next time I will take an automatic.

I did not even notice the bulb and X setting as they seem so lose and dont seem to be doing anything when turned.

Will try your suggestions on the next roll .

I notice the same thing happening on my 1000d when shutter was set fast.

I did think shutter speed was the key to exposure , but the penny just dropped as regards using a flash. It only really exposes what the flash lights up for that split second.
I assume that aperture settings play a bigger part on a flash exposing correctly than shutter settings.

I got a strange feeling of deja vu about this, so I dug up the thread you posted IN JULY where I posted the manual :-D

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=79559550
I'd forgotten how lovely and minty the camera looks. Mmmm.

    Manual here http://www.butkus.org/chinon/russian/zorki_4k/zorki_4k.htm
page 19 gives a brief introduction to flash operation.

There's also the post at the end where I say ... ahem ...
In general though the zorki probably has some really low sync speed for flash 1/30 or 1/60 or something, and you probably have to make sure that it's set to x-sync and not bulb, there's probably a little switch somewhere. Also that shoe at the top doesn't look like a hotshoe so you're going to need a sync cable for your flash .

    zorkitest12.jpg

Another set came in and I am noticing more problems.

The same line appears in 5 other pics . I checked the shutter and it seems perfect.

My dad said the camera did this when he bought it over 30 years ago. But what is it.

    Always in the same place.

It's possible that it's the scanner, but much more likely that the shutter is stuttering ever so slightly at that point giving that line. Other option is a light leak.

Are all the negs on the roll the same? No difference in different shutter speeds? Do a search on zorki 4 light leaks and see what you get.

yeah. I finding good info on it now. New light seals would be the first move I think.

    Thanks
