Survival of the fittest?

I'm not a fitness freak/bodybuilder/Bear Grylls type but I have two young kids and, at 43 I'm no spring chicken, but I want to be 'fit' enough to muck about with them when they're older and boisterous. With this in mind I recently started (about 6 months ago) in the local gym to try and maintain a decent level of fitness. I got talking 'prepping' with someone there (discreetly, over in a corner, where 'normal' people couldn't hear us!) and he planted a seed in my mind:

'Survival fitness' - I'd never really thought about it much until that night when I went home and missed a nights sleep as I imagined all sorts of scenarios about being stranded by ice, floods and cloverfield type events. Now, every time I visit the gym I make sure I can run 5k in under half an hour - cycle 5k in 15 mins and row 1k in under 5 mins. If I'm caught without the bob I promise myself I'm going to compile one day I should be able to get home.

Getting out of dodge with wife and kids in tow...now that's a dilemna I've yet to get my head around...my thoughts tend to lean to staying put. I've lots of food/water supplies and a huge green house. I have plans of how to defend it and enrol neighbours to help me do so, the food, water and toilet paper might sweeten the deal for them. Another line of defence are my two dogs (Boxer & German Shepherd). I've just read my post and realised how I've digressed into a stream of thinking out loud. But anyway...fitness...anybody else take it into account?
