What car to buy new - €24,500

I'm looking to pick up a car for work in January. The budget is €24,500 excluding delivery. The car must be new...

I need somthing that can cope with two children, have a diesel engine and have a bit of poke. Don't care if it's been hit with the ugly stick once it got the toys inside and goes like the clappers.

I currently have a (2011) skoda octavia 2.0 (CR) - 140bhp with all the toys ( leather, 17"'s etc. It's fine but the back is just too tight. The engine is only okay, i feel it a little dull for a 2.0. (I know I'll have all the skoda lovers on with differnet views)

So what suggestions do you guys have?

Think your looking for the 2013 reg rather than a better car,
The value you would get with 24k in used market would be incredible,

To be honest, you're going to find it tough enough to get the spec and power you want on that budget. There should be a new Octavia due soon that might be an option?

A bit? It'll be more expensive again in January.

The OP had a simple request, and clear budget...

Just had Opel in with a new Astra Saloon. Not too bad looking and has plenty of space in the rear seats and a fairly decent boot too.

1.7CDTi 130ps SE comes in at €24,295 (pre budget) ex. works so will probably go over budget unfortunately, and over budget by the time you stick Metallic on too. 110ps SE is €23,995 or if you drop to an SC then the 130ps is €23,695. SC is missing an armrest though as it has an actual handbrake rather than the button the SE and above get.

Left field - Mitis Lancer 1.8TD 150ps. Lists at €21,850 but I can't remember what space is like in the rear. What I do remember is that it feels a lot quicker than the 150ps suggests, and I think it's a cracking looking car, but interior is a bit cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - Would I not be falling into the Insignia/Passat/mondeo/i40 for the buget.

It's a straight purchase and wil be bought in a company name which will be able to benefit from fleet . On top of the budget there is €1,500 for delivery and related charges - So I've €26,000 to hand over to the dealer - this is without taking fleet discount into account from the manufacturer

A lot of car there for the money - Nice styling too... The down side is the plastics inside - It's hard and bland... And there are very little accessories available....

Well, that changes everything if it's on purchase price rather than RRP.

Suggestions on the way in a few mins.

    Don't care if it's a model that's outgoing once it's loaded!

Both Mondeo and Passat are not much bigger than Octavia. they are just 4cm wider, not sure about their size inside.

    check toyota avensis
    mitsubishi ASX

if it is the fleet car maybe talk to Mazda about their new cx5 - it is great on fuel economy, and not too many of them yet in Ireland, so maybe there is a chance to get good deal.

The CX5 is a great "car" but I don't know what availability will be like for the new year - I was trying to buy one last month but they couldn't be had for love nor my money!

What would be the standard cash discount on an Astra- I guess 2 grand? I wonder would a 2.0 Astra SE be got for 24500 cash?
