Made redundant but new job pending

I got notice last Wednesday that the company I worked for was closing down, which happened yesterday when I got the P45. However, thanks to some contacts via the company, I was able to secure a new job with another company from the 31st of this month. My dad told me to sign on for the week, saying that I shouldn't have any gaps in my stamps. I find it a bit odd to sign on for such a short time, especially since I have a job lined up. Chances are I'd be back in work before the claim was even processed.

Also, my new employer said he had some concerns over whether I'd even get the redundancy payment due to the quick turnaround, but this seems to have been debunked from my own research.

I've never signed on or claimed before so this would be completely new to me, sorry if the answer is blatantly obvious. :o

What happens if the new job doesn't work out? It may be a good idea to open a claim.

If you receive an actual redundancy payment, you might not receive a payment for a period of time.

I've been told that it could take anything between 6-8 months before I get any redundancy or back pay.

Always sign on the first day you are unemployed. As it will be a jsb claim when you sign off online on the 31 or whenever, complete the form online to have the dept post out any monies outstanding.

In some countries, you get paid as usual for X months, until you are employed - you don't get a lump sum.
