Not really that hard. You need some space to let the pumpkinms grow though (depending on pumpkin seed type)

Know when to plant from pot into ground, know when to feed, let the bees pollinate them, know when and which pumpkins to take and let grow (cut the others away).

Know when to feed and water to get good sized pumpkins.

And know when to harvest and avoid frost damage.

    Simples.:)

Oh and its my girlfriend who grows them each year.:)

The pumpkins for 65 cents in Tesco are tiny, they are baby "jack o lantern" pumpkins...(about half the size of a football).

Normal sized ones are alot more than 65 cents, thats a fact.

If anyone has grown their own pumpkins, then now is the time to take them in/harvest them.

Sharp Frost due on Friday and Saturday night.

Pumkins will turn to mush the minute frost gets at them.

65c ones in Tesco seem to be finished. None in Cabra today although they did have them yesterday. Decided not to get them yesterday cos they don't last that long especially if you carve them! They will be stinking by Halloween if you do them too early :(

For anyone with unripened pumpkins,do the following.......

    get a cardboard box.

    get some ripe bananas.

Place the pumpkin in the cardboard box.place 2 or 3 ripe bananas around the pumpkin in the cardboard box.

Store it in a dry room.

The ripe bananas give of a chemical (ethylene) that in turn causes the pumpkin to ripen up.

    Simples.:)

Thats what we do,when we have to harvest them early due to frost.

DO NOT use a plastic bag or container,as you will sweat them and then will turn to mush and rot.

Was going to buy one but the sign said 69c per kilo and the sizes varied so I was unsure of the actual price.

Got a monster of a pumpkin is SuperValu for €1 yesterday. Going mad as I had previously spent €3 each for smaller, more misshapen ones in Dunnes!

I spent yesterday going around the shops comparing Pumpkins and decided best one was in supervalu, best price for a good sized one for carving, need to go early though as they go fast! Usually they are put out about 9 but thats just my local one!

    I bought one that's about 30kgs and maybe heavier, 24" high :)
Cost me €15 though from a pumpkin farm :)

About 20 cents for the pumpkin seed...(depending on type of pumpkin and origin of seed).

The ironic thing about it is that Tesco and Aldi and Lidl bring in their pumpkins from pumpkin farms in the UK and Europe.

So you aint even buying Irish grown pumpkins.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,115 ✭✭✭Pal

The €0.65 ones have a Tesco sticker 'Culinary Pumpkin'.
The same ones in the same shop priced at €2.50 have a sticker 'Medium Pumpkin'.

The pumpkin doesn't know what sticker it is wearing.
    Makes no sense to me.

I got mine in Tesco last week while they still had decent sized ones. Here's my lantern I made last night. Quality of the pic isnt great....its a ghost opening the door to trick or treaters :) Well, meant to be anyways!

Bought a reasonably sized one in Tesco on Saturday for €2.50, went into Supervalu this morning and they had quite a selection at €3.49 each or 3 for €2! Checked with the manager - they are currently part of their vegetable 3 for €2 promotion. Needless to say I couldn't resist 3 nice large pumpkins looking at me!!

What's ironic about that? My days of seeking out Irish products are well gone I only want to know how much it costs now. Unemployed husband and 4 kids to consider. It's ALL about the money :o

Because all the ads, leaflets and publicity from Tesco,Aldi and Lidl about buying their produce in from local people and Irish farmers and companies.

Something as simple as pumpkins and they bypass the Irish growers and import them from the UK and Europe.

No Pumpkins in my local Supervalu or Centra this morning..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,396 ✭✭✭lindtee

They were out of the big pumpkins in my local supervalu this morning too:( They had a few of the 3 for €2 which are an ok size (not near as small as the Tesco 65c ones) but the €1 ones are worth the extra few pence. Here is one my 12 year old son carved yesterday. Showed him paddy147's pic of the giant pumpkin and he is demanding we grow our own pumpkins for next year.
