Groupon gripe

A friend asked me if this was a good laptop to buy, thought she was getting a fantastic deal because groupon is usually 50% off or more. This is the exact same company offering the deal. €329 is $268, what a saving and less RAM too. Beware

Its 50% off RRP. Everytime you something is X% off that will be a percentage off the Recommended Retail Price.

The exact same laptop from the deal suppliers website is £2 more expensive but with 2GB less ram. I don't see how this is even a deal, seems like a scam to me.

One website being cheaper than another does not mean there is a scam. You seem to have a loose definition of what a scam actually is.

    Scam no, bad deal yes

Fair point, i think we both agree it's a really shit deal.

    UK price + extra 3% irish vat = €350
Also, Groupon does 50% off on experiences and dining, but not 50% off on goods.

Same applies to other voucher sites.

That Groupon pic doesn't have a "before" price. They are selling the laptop for €329 but how much are they saying you are supposed to save?

I guess it doesn't really matter as while that's not a bad price, it's not a "special offer" price either. I saw pretty much that exact laptop in D.I.D yesterday for just €50 more.

They're both Cleron so wouldn't even bother looking at them!

Also, you need to look up the work 'Scam' in a dictionary!

Any of those group on deals are rubbish really (for the retailer). If you ring the supplier directly and ask will they match the deal they will jump at it as they wont have to pay Groupon. Groupon typically charge up to 50% of the deal price to the retailer. So if you buy a voucher 'worth' 100 euro for 50 the retailer will only get 25. If you buy directly he gets the full 50. They also do not get paid if the voucher is never used. Try it..ring the retailer directly and you might get an even better deal.

I know all that! I don't use them sites, but they're not scams... just clever marketing for dumb people

This is very important, I doubt most people think they get so much. This is why you have such a huge amount of high margin businesses on groupon, esp. ones which might be suffering in todays economy. So it is littered with hotel, massage & beauty salon offers. Then you have overpriced stuff like earphones, quoting false RRP with alleged massive discounts.

So if I see a fairly low margin item like a laptop on it I really question how they are doing it. You also see dental offers for crowns, I question how good a job they can do. Like I expect a little less in my takeaway from groupon since they are only getting 25% of the usual price I would pay, which might barely cover ingredients.

It was 50% when they arrived.
Max is now about 30% and on goods they will drop to 10%. - And that's from direct experience of them.
