    Shot him at 50 yards.

Not a lot around yet. The birds don't come in around properly until October.

Headed out this evening to see if there were any more snipe showing up.
I brought the shotgun just in case and sure enough at the very start of my snipe ground I put up a snipe and the springer but up another at the same time.

I fired at the one I put up and knocked him at 30 yards. I couldn't figure out where about he dropped and after 20 mins with the springer searching through heather there was no sign of him. I had a feeling he dropped further out but still couldn't see anything.

I moved on to see if anything else was about. Another 3 was put up but no shots were fired as I already had one in the bag so don't want to shoot every bird that is coming in.

On the way back the springer found the snipe in a drain behind where we were looking so happy days. Season is going well so far and hope it continues. Dog is getting stronger and stronger and after changing his food to Brilly's he is a different dog!

I decided to head out earlier for an hour or two to see what was moving around.
With only two and a half weeks until the 1st I am trying to get every minute I can. I didn't get to do much work with the springer during the summer so trying to get him fitter for the four days of solid hunting coming up shortly.

I decided to head to a different area this time to see if any snipe have decided to come in. I was hopeful with the colder and wetter weather that the area might be starting to fill up.

Before hitting the boggy area I hit the fields around it which haven't been touched in years. There is a lot of cover and it usually holds a few pheasants but so far I have seen nothing.

Started hunting up the right hand side of it, working the ditches, drains and grass. Dog is quartering well and picking up scents but nothing stirring. I then noticed a pheasant coming into land over in the far corner, about 350 yards away so I know I will finally get some pheasant scent up the dogs nose.
Worked up to where I saw him land and sure enough the dog starts to get very excited and starts to work harder. Down he went into a drain and up comes a nice pheasant. It seemed big enough but the tail wasn't that long.

Carried on to my snipe ground and the first patch we try results in a snipe. It was a young snipe but none the less the dog worked great. That's all I saw so headed back for home.

Was a nice day to be out even with the rain.

Think what you have there is a Jack Snipe! Smaller bird with shorter bill. Seemingly their easier hit than Common Snipe, don't zig zag as much in flight!!

    Just back in.
More snipe starting to come in.

Had a bad outing with the springer. He seemed to do the complete opposite of what I wanted him to do. Talking about testing your patience.

Still managed to bag these two.

Your right Eddie it was a jack snipe. It was a close shot so didn't have time to zig zag.
That's a good looking dog, dev
Thanks DS. He is coming along nicely.

I have to agree! I love shooting them. There is no other bird that will test your mounting & leading within a few seconds like they do.

Great looking dog dev, well done with the snipe. They won't be long training your eye for the pheasant. What do you do with the snipe?? Do you eat them?

Having seen snipe rise above me many times, I have NO idea how you manage to shoot them. They are indeed nimble little rockets, well done to any hunter that gets one.

Opened the account this morning. :) Got this lad after I had mentally called it a day. Been out since very early and the stag I'd been stalking had mooched off over the fence while I was closing distance, decided to have a poke around anyway and while I was scanning, the thought occurred "Er, are those two heads where there weren't two heads a minute ago?" Yes indeed, they were, so dropped down to ready the sticks, put them up and got up with the rifle on them, stag is just quartering slightly towards me, so smacked him in the chest, watched him go down at the shot. Distance couldn't have been more than seventy yards or so, and they just appeared out of nowhere. Got the smaller of them, have plans for the other though!

Oh, you'd like this spot dev, absolutely thick with snipe. I'm thinking that's possibly the next project for the season, along with a pheasant after the 1st perhaps.

About as much as chance as of me hitting them with the 12 bore! What cartridges are you using for the snipe, dev? I only have 5s and 6s at the moment and wouldn't mind having a crack at a few of them now that I've got a deer in the shed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,147 ✭✭✭dev110

I usually use 7 1/2's but have 4 boxes of 6's here that I'm working my way through at the minute.

Good to know I'm already equipped so! Have another spot with snipe and pheasant on it, so it'll be 6s for everything then.

Just remember that shooting snipe is all about instinct. You get very little, if any, time to think about where you are aiming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I can see my initial cartridge to bird ratio being appalling, but it's about as steep as a learning curve gets! Never shot snipe before. Will be interesting. If you fancy a ramble up this way sometime, give me a shout. Springer would probably like this place.

I'll take you up on that sometime but I doubt I'll bring the springer. He travels very bad. Back seats and boot have been covered in sick to many times to mention :(

Had a very good first half of the day.
Went to my spot with heavy cover and worked every ditch.
Working up along a stream, that used to be a river but dried up now, the springer came on a scent. He worked it for 20-30 yards and then darted down into the drain and up comes a cock pheasant.

There was a foot of space between a tree on the right and bushes on the left. The pheasant rose in the middle and was flying left. I managed to get the gun up, swing and pulled the trigger. I didn't know if I got him until I ran 10 yards further to a gap in the bushes. Sure enough there was the pheasant panned out in the field. Sent to springer to collect and he dropped him at my feet.

I have no idea how I managed to get a shot off as another second and he was gone.

    IMAG0223.jpg

Moved onto another area and worked plenty of ditches for 2 hours and stumbled on a tiny bit of wooded area. It was full of pheasants. 2 hens rose at the beginning of it and then saw a cock run into it. I followed but it got to overgrown to get a shot. I found it funny that I flushed 3 hens out of a tree at 10.30 but then out of another tree I heard another take off and sure enough the crowing of a cock started as if he was teasing me. Couldn't see him at all and had no idea where he had flew and didn't have the heart to go through all the ditches again. He will be there for another day.

Had another shot a cock on a cleared barley field but only half caught him. He landed and took off for the ditch. The dog tore the ditch out of it but sheep wire the far side stopped any chance of catching him. Hunted the field the far side of the ditch after lifting the dog over and sure enough picked up the scent again only to follow it to another ditch with more sheep wire. I lost all hope of getting him. Sheep wire has to be hunters worst nightmare.

Dog is panned out in his house and I'm panned out waiting for some food. Hope to get out in an hour or that.

Do the 7 1/2 cause alot of damage due to the size of bird, i normally use 8's or 9's 32g i feel there more appropiate for them.

I usually use 28gr 7 1/2 and haven't noticed that much damage tbh
