Castrol recommends 4.3 litres of 0W-30 or 5W-40 C3, see www.castrol.co.uk. Are you topping up or changing the oil?

Its the specification that's important. Once it conforms to BMW LL04/LL01 spec (it will say it on the bottle)then it will be fine. This can be 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 or 5w40 although IMO 5w30 or 5w40 are better suited to our climate.

All the above are fully synthetic oils.

It's a 318i which is a petrol car so the C3 specification is not necessary. On that Castrol site Edge 0w30 and 5w30 are listed as are Magnatec C3 oils.
