Hi all, hope you can help me with this.

Last week I was powerwashing my 2002 1.6 A3. I suspect I got some water into the air intake. I started up and and a rough and unstable idle down around 500-700 rpm with the engine management light on. I left it run and the problem resolved itself.

Last night, after a week of driving with no problems I was nearly 2 hours into a long journey when I stopped to discover the low rough idle was back .Then the engine managment light cam on and the engine ran very rough the whole time. I the noticed it was chugging and was way down on power.

At the moment the symptoms are; Sometimes low and always unstable idle, Rough running, Big reduction in power, Ticking noise from centre of engine block, Engine management light on, ESP light on and chugging.

Any ideas what the problem could be. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Could be am ignition coil/spark plug issue if water got into the air intake.Car will need to be scanned to see what codes are stored in the ECU - where are you based ?

Thanks for the reply, im based in Wexford but in Limerick at the moment. Would you advise against driving it home?

You need to take it to a garage or someone with VCDS to have it scanned - if you were in or near Kildare i could help out.

If its an igintion coil issue there would be no hassle driving it home,i recently drove home from limerick on 3 cylinders - you need to adjust your driving style though, don't stress the engine,no hard acceleration and realise when you pull out of a junction its going to take you ages to gather speed lol

You have to get it scanned. However you could buy a can of carb cleaner and clean the throttle body in situ, by removing
The accordion hose from the TB and giving it a good clean with a rag with throttle held open.
I doubt its a coil prob on the 1.6, more likely a temp sensor at a guess, but as said already you've got to get it scanned

The A3 has a coil pack and leads, the coil packs on them tend to split/crack and the leads tend to crack, as other posters have said you should have it scanned for the eml. This should show the true fault.
