Hi lads, went out Sat morning with the father for a bit of duck decoying on the lake, we weren't going to get up at all going off the wether forecast as they said there was some dense fog promised, but we did and were rewarded! we were set up in a bay with the boat hidden in the rushes, we had 24 black and white decoys to the left and 12 mallard to the right with landing zone in between, we were all set up at around 7 am and it was still black dark, there wasn't a puff of wind out so we weren't expecting too much action but after about 30 minutes i heard a few birds whipping past and splash straight into the decoys, it was still very hard to see but i stood up to spook them and they lifted off to my right, dropped two of them and was delighted as could hardly see them! then just as day broke another flock came in (about 15 birds) again decoyed well and i dropped another two high birds over my right shoulder and my dad got another, we would of been happy to head off at that stage but was still early, we had a sup of tea and got back to business and another flock came into the bay but were very wary, they cirled twice and were just within range, we both fired both barrels and nothing, but as the birds flew across the bay about 200 yards - splash, two dropped, we started the engine straight away and headed out to collect them, one was dead on the water but another had dived and made it to the rushes - sickened we didn't find him after a good search, we went back to the rushes and set up again, it went very quite after that, seen a few more but it was time to head home with a nice bag. happy days no thanks to met eireann!!!all the ducks we seen were black and white, spotted a few weary mallard when we were driving the boat back.
