Sideline productions have bought the rights to make an Irish version of Cheers!

According to them SAM could be

-for TV3 a ex-Premireship footballer to Dublin or
-for TG4 an ex-Hurler returning to the West. :rolleyes:

Paul Tylak playing Jerry,
Neil Delamere playing Kramer,
Simon Delaney playing George,
and Maeve Higgins playing Elaine.

Most of the story lines will center on Jerry's place which will be one of the larger bedsits in Rathmines.

Cheers is my all-time favourite "oh look what's on! i think I'll watch that seeing as it's started" show while channel surfing. I imagine I'll only watch an Irish version for its 'car-crash' value.

Would leave well enough alone as the original is such an iconic classic, don't know about the Spanish version but Irish TV's record of non abysmal comedy of any type is next to none, only two examples ever I can think of are Batchalor's Walk and Paths To Freedom.

Even at that his comedy writing is way better than the Irish versions would be if it was ever made!

A Dublin-based TV production company has agreed a tentative deal with American network CBS Broadcasting to produce an Irish version of the American TV sitcom, Cheers.

Well, the Spanish version limped along for 7 episodes before being cancelled. Cheers was a classic where all the elements of themes, writing and cast came together and it should be left alone. It just doesn't work on a low budget where you do a find/replace on a 30 year old script to change Boston to Dublin, baseball player to GAA player etc. Leave the dodgy remakes for 80's slasher movies.

Not to mention it just wouldn't work simply because the pub signifies different things to different cultures.

For example, In Ireland going to the pub is (or at least was until people couldn't afford it anymore) seen as a perfectly acceptable social activity and a way to meet up with friends, have a good time etc.

However in America (or the parts I was in anyway) you'd generally just see a lot of deadbeat, middle-aged men in pubs, sitting around on their own, nursing their drink and dying to tell their sob-story to anyone who'd listen.

Not saying this is true of every American bar or patron, but I saw a lot of it any of the pubs I went to.

Point is in Cheers it's implied that these characters are losers simply by the mere fact of being inside that pub. I think this is something that's actually lost in translation to a certain degree on Irish people who watch the show.

God, that sounds like an awful mess. Translating all 275 scripts? I wouldn't bother, lads. :rolleyes: Start with a pilot, you might get 6 episodes on air if you are lucky.

I very much doubt that they're translating all the scripts. RTE website has probably just taken the story from the IFTN website and that site is notorious for mangling the facts of stories they run.

I think they have the rights to use material from the 275 scripts. Why would they bother translate them first? They wouldn't.

IIRC most/all of the first 6 eps of the US Office were pretty much remakes of UK episodes? After that the US show went off in its own direction and now barely resembles the UK version.

Maybe Cheers Ireland will copy this method.
