Don't mind the dealer, ask the FAO in the station, they'll be the deciding factor. Right or wrong some have subsistuted .22LR for centre fire. In my case I was offered a sub for a 22 to .243.
In the cases of my last few purcahses I have always chatted with the local Guard before putting in paper or deposit, thats just the way I do it.

my local station has only 2 guards and they haven't a clue about guns, i may go straight into the district superintendent.

It is really down to your super. I got a .22lr subbed for a .223 but there are some that have had to apply for a new license.
Have a chat with your district Super and see what they say.

I've had the same discussion with a local sergeant and done a swap from a .22 hornet to a .308. Her logic was very simple;it roughly went like :".. they're both unrestricted rifles and you've good reason for the larger caliber so I'm sorting my side of things and the Super can sort it when he gets around to it, won't be too long." Two weeks later the card fell in the door.... .

It is possible swapping within the same category of firearm as long as you demonstrate good reason for the step up or down in caliber.

yea but do they look at a .22 to be the same caliber on paper to them as a .220.

The Garda guidlines (Garda.ie) are always handy to look over. As far as I know its ment to be like for like (caliber function etc) but as countless members will testify here its very subjective both in a postive way (my own case) or negative, were indivuials where made re-apply for a new FAC when going from DB shotguns to Semi Autos Shoties.

If you're dealing with a chap or girl who knows a little bit about firearms I'd expect them to look at a little bit more than just bullet diameter.

Your side of the coin is very simple; I take it you want to do considerably more fox shooting hence the step up, so it's up to you to demonstrate that you know that the machine you're looking to get is a lot more potent than what you have.
Demonstrate that knowledge and also make the point that you want to kill those foxes, not hurt them to crawl away to die miserably and that's why you need the gun. Also demonstrate that you have the knowledge to use the more powerful gun safely and that you have permission on suitable land.

Once you cover those points you have most objective criteria on your side of the story covered.
