3 weeks ago, I got a 5 year old Jack Russell from a rescue centre. She is settling in nicely and already is largely under my command. She is bright and has been trained before judging by her behaviour and a few tricks.

I am walking her off the lead and she understands the following commands

    "come" (although isnt 100% obedient)
"wait" for when we are crossing a road which is very well observed.
    "slowly" for approaching a road
"close" for getting to heel when a jogger or cyclist is approaching

My issue is her reaction to other dogs

when other dogs approach I tend to walk to the side and bring her "close"
she does, but then the other dog bounds up and starts to sniff her, she goes for them, growling, snapping and snarling. I then have to raise my voice to her and bring her back under control. I then feel I have to apologise to the other dogs owner

Does anyone have any tips on how I can stop her going for other dogs please

    thanks

O - that's not good - have you done a search on socialising dogs here on this forum? There's been lots of stuff on it in the past.

S/he Dosnt sound like a terribly well socialised dog :0 the kennel club in Cloughran near Dublin Airport do socialisation classes at e5.oo per evening - all on the lead stuff for " beginner" dogs. It allows you & your dog to Practise in a controlled environment getting them Used to meeting & behaving around other dogs.
You could ring them And see if they have a base near you -
I know they also have a big base on the southside of Dublin - and it's a " national" organisation.

Fair dues to you for rescuing : )
    Good luck : )

thanks, I can only guess that its something in her past thats making her so nervous and aggressive around other dogs. (Though it doesnt help when other owners dont keep their dogs under control)

I'll have a look and see what I find.
