Hey lads just wondering if you can advise me here, have my NCT on Wednesday and just went to take out my logbook to have everything ready and can't find the bloody thing. I am going to ring Shannon tomorrow but I know it won't be out in time for Wednesday morning, will they still test the car or am I fecked? Oh and just for clarity I'm talking about the vehicle registration document when I say logbook.

You don't need it, far as I know, bring the nct letter and a form of ID

I never got a letter, just an email and a text. I'll have my license with me though and the email and text on my phone.

I think you'll be ok. Print out the email if you can.

They have tightened up on the paperwork, you'll need the VRC and ID.

NCT website as well as NCT legislation as well as my own practice seem to show both documents: ID (which can be passport or driving licence only - nothing else), and vehicle registration certificate is required for the test.

I started a thread some time ago when I was refused a test because I didn't have either driving licence or passport.

I know they'll refuse if you have no ID, Its the reg cert that I wonder about.

They advise you bring it but strictly speaking it is not required.

He asked me for it. I had it so I gave it to him.
I'm not sure what would be the result if I didn't have it.

PS - It's not just ID that they require. It's strictly driving licence or passport. Nothing else is accepted.

But if someone doesn't hold passport neither driving licence - how can he NCT a car?

I think this was covered before, just bring someone with you that has valid ID

They'll ask for the registration documents if the VIN on the computer does not match the car.

    Does this often happen?

Can't be too often as it seems the majority are not asked for them.

How would you have got to the NCT centre if you don't have a license?

I did NCT recently and was not asked for log book (I have also lost it - dratted bit of paper, the old card was much more suitable.)

How does the person NCT'ing a car drive to the test centre with no license?

Considering you're technically required to have your driving license on you anyway...

I didn't have my licence as it was left for exchange with motortax office.
Noting I could do about it.

Yes, but not everyone happens to be foreign and simultaneously transferring their license to an Irish one at the exact time of their NCT. I'd imagine it's a rather rare occurrence. Come on, use some common sense.

Also I'd imagine you held a passport to get to Ireland in the first place Cinio?

By law if you drive a car, you must have a driving, licence! Simples!

I wasn't exchanging Polish licence for Irish licence.
You have to hand over licenece to them for evey kind of exchange... f.e. expired licence, new category, new address, etc. Every driver must exchange licence from time to time.

I do hold a passport, but few months ago when I was in Poland I forgot to take it back to Ireland. So I don't have it with me at the moment.

There was a whole thread about it. I realised a night before that I didn't have any document entitling me for NCT. I chansed it anyway, but I was refused.

    EDIT: Here's the thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=80711891

You dont need a log book for test, only if chassis number doesnt match the system , we can check if its an error on the system or an error in the printing of the log book, can easily happen when you are putting in numerous digits into a computer. log books are handy sometimes because people arrive and dont know the reg of the car and in some cases when you ask them what car it is, they say 'a red one'.
I've only ever refused someone a test because they forgot money and in one case where a person arrived by foot (yes,no car, her husband was bringing it over shortly). car will still be tested if you forget licence, passport and log book.

In Ballymun on friday was asked for the log book I hadn't got it just showing my driving licence was ok,I also kept up my record of Never passing test first time!!

    I was told otherwise.
As I couldn't present driving licence either passport, I offerd my personal ID issued by Polish government (document which should be recognised all over EU and which entitles me to travel all over EU instead of passport (must by accepted by customs). But NCT tester said this wasn't good enough.
He didn't inform me he could test my car, and fail it visually for lack of document (I found it out later in this forum).

And that is the end of that chapter.
