Rum Recommendations

I've started drinking a lot of rum in the past year or so. In that time I've been through a few bottles of various types. I started on Captain Morgans but then moved on to other dark rums which have included Brugal, Havana Club (some aged dark version I picked up in duty free), and Mount Gay. I picked up a bottle of Kraken spiced rum earlier today. It was a bit pricey but it's a fairly nice rum from what I remember of it.

I'd usually drink it with coke or ginger ale, ice and a wedge of lime which I would squeeze into the glass. Probably wouldn't bother with the lime if it's a spiced rum. Of the rums I've had to date Brugal would be miles out in front. Really smooth and easy to drink. Any friends I've given it to have agreed.

Are there many other good rums out there I'm missing out on? I have also had Sea Dogg and obviously Bacardi. Not a fan of either.

cachacca, brazilian rum. nice on its own with lemon or lime and ice, or in the caparhinia drink...

Havana Club 7 year old (Cuban) is great for drinking neat. For mixing you could go with the Havana Club Especial. Pampero Aniversario (Venezuelan) is also top notch. Another favourite of mine is Appleton Reserve 8 year old (Jamaican).

Of these 3 Havana Club would be my first choice. I just stocked up and my latest acquisitions were a bottle of each of the Havana Club's and a bottle of Kraken to try something new.

Appleton's Jamaican rum is very good

We have VX in the house.

Actually, the Lidsl James Cook stuff is quite good, for the price.

Old Sea Dog is lovely, in my opinion, but I've heard it called an aquired taste. Similar is Morgan's Black.

Anytime anyone asks me that question i point them in the direction of brugal.

Other rums have been suggested to me and the only one that came close was some nicaraguan rum that was amazing. But unfourtunatly the name escapes me.

Brugal has a much more subtle flavour than something like Havana Club. I love it, but I'm no connoisseur so maybe it's not for everyone.

I've seen that Appletons around alright, I might pick up a bottle at some stage. Problem is I already have a fair amount of rum in the house right now, I'm sure I'll see to that soon enough.

Frynge - I've seen some Nicaraguan rum in the duty free before. It was about £40 a bottle so I decided against it, maybe it's the same one.

Also for anyone in Dublin, the Mercantile on Dame Street have a huge selection of rums. Only problem is they charge you €6.50 a shot for the non standard ones. Might be worth a go if you're feeling flush some night and want to try any of the rums mentioned in this thread.

I really like Matusalem Solera Seven year old and Angosturra 1919 Eight year old - unfortunately because of the prohibitive cost here I only partake on Holidays!
