I'm delighted to see Dúchas na Sionna, Shannon Town’s heritage group are working to restore Hastings Cottage.

Dúchas na Sionna, Shannon Town’s heritage group, has begun work on a project to conserve the remains of Hastings Cottage in Tullyvarraga. Ten volunteers spent Saturday 25th February clearing the vegetation and exposing the walls of the cottage that have not been seen for the last forty years or so.

People who have been in Shannon since the early days may remember the attractive thatched cottage at the end of the Slí na Mara Boreen. It was last lived in by Mr. John Hastings until his death in the late 1960s and was subsequently used by the scouts until vandals set the roof alight in the mid 1970s. Since then the cottage and its outbuildings have fallen into a sad state of decay and neglect.

The area has been completely cleared away now and you can see what is left of the cottage. Rumor has it that the entire cottage will be restored in time for the festivities in 2016. Great for the area.
