Have we seen the end of qualifiers for the rest of this season? Any of your clubs still playing as it lies this weekend?

I played pitch and putt in Lahinch yesterday. My friend hit his ball against an electric fence. I told him to play it as it lies, but the wuss moved it for fear of electrocution.

Got a couple of nasty mud-balls yesterday on the Fairway. Also had one plug in the fairway. Methinks it's time to herald in the Winter. Qualifying comps have finished now at my club anyway. I'd say the weekend just gone was pretty much last chance saloon in a lot of clubs.

Lift, clean and drop in the rough yesterday so I'd say that's it :(

12 hole turkey league start next week so yesterday was the last qualifying.

Lucan and Castlewarden intend on their opens this week being qualifiers. If we get no rain in the next 2 days that is.

Have not played links golf but due to the fact that most links courses have superb drainage do they have qualifying comp's right through the winter also?

Slightly O.T. perhaps but does anyone know when(ish) the End Of Year Review on handicaps happens? I guess it varies per-club perhaps but even to know when each club does this would be interesting.

Seems to revolve around the hour going back. Most clubs seem to change to 12 hole comps or 9 hole re-enter etc.

Yeah played there yesterday. I would imagine summer rules could be played there for another while, it was very dry there...

Placing on the fairways for us the last 2 or 3 weeks. No relief in the rough which is a joke because of mudballs. What's the reasoning behind not having relief in the rough?

Do you not get a point one if there's relief in the rough?

An excellent assumption, and you are correct, you do not qualify for a point one increase if the ball can be placed or dropped in the rough. There is a course near me that is based on heavy clay soil and gets very wet, yet they will be playing as it lies in the rough until Christmas.

Played Druids Heath last Monday. On the whole remarkably dry and in good condition with well cut fairways, and the greens were rolling lovely. But still picked up a few mudballs, which would have ruined a lovely game if we had been in a competition. We were told that there had been heavy rain the night before and buggies were not allowed on the day.

Play as it lies in Connemara, although the winter tees were out today.

Played with an ex club captain last Sunday and there was placing everywhere. I decided to play a ball as it lies because it was sitting up nicely and I didn't see the need for placing. He pulled me on it before I hit the shot, saying if there is placing I have to place the ball. He's a low handicapper and good golfer, so I wasn't bothered arguing ...... I just picked the ball up a few inches and put it back in the exact same spot.

Never heard that in 40 years of golfing :( is there such a rule?

Unless it's a local rule to stop people hacking out, I don't think it's a rule at all, I have never heard of it but then again I have only been playing properly approx 2 years!

Nope, not unless you were in GUR etc and there is a local rule.
If that were true then is he saying you always have to place on the green too?

Maybe he wasn't suggesting it was a rule at all and was just you had to as to protect your course. I heard a green keeper have a go at the pro for playing as it lies during placing everywhere. I know there will be a lot of places on the course that won't pick up a single bit of muck no matter what time of the year but no harm to be in the habit. Same way people can be lazy about repairing divots and pitch marks because they have to bend down god love them.
