Hi guys, looking for some advice about my astra. Left it into a garage (which i have heard mixed reviews about after i left it in!) for a basic service. Got it fully serviced some where else in Feb and passed the nct in March. For the past two weeks I am hearing a whining noise every couple of minutes which I thought was coming from the front drivers tyre area. Brought it to the attention of the garage when I left it in for them to check out. Left my car in at 1pm and the car was still parked in the exact same spot down from the garage all day and they only brought it out for test drive at 5.15pm. At 6pm I got a phone call to ask me what noise I was hearing and then he said that it was my gearbox and that I needed a new one, over €1000!!! Surely a half hour is not enough time to service the car and to check every possible thing that could be making the noise! they also had a list of things that was wrong which cost me €400 including the service. Since leaving the car in I have heard reports that they are lethal for saying things are wrong with cars and saying they need fixing when they don't. I know nothing about cars. Also this chain garage has a centre in almost everywhere. I only left it in because i work opposite the place!!

If you don't trust them then get a second opinion before committing to anything.

Sometimes a noise can be diagnosed in minutes or even seconds on a test drive. Sometimes it can take a lot longer than that. We don't know the details in this case so there is no way of knowing whether the diagnosis is correct or not.

To be fair you're asking trained professionals to diagnose a problem. So if it takes them 5 mins or 5 hours isn't the major concern here. They may simply know from experience and an examination what the issue is.

I am currently driving a car that needs gearbox bearings and it took them one drive of 20 mins to figure it out. I assume there are a limited amount of things that can cause that specific whining noise when I accelerate so they check the things in order and whatever isn't banjaxed isn't the fault: process of elimination.. My guy did refer me to the lad that does his gearbox work for a proper examination and full quote for the work

I would concur with getting a 2nd opinion if you're unhappy or unsure of what way to go. Better safe than sorry and satisfy your own mind
