Re-Tap Bottom Bracket

    Hi guys,

I managed to cross thread my bottom bracket threads on the frame of my commuter bike today. Just wondering if anyone has managed to get theirs re-tapped before and looking for a recommendation of where to get it done. Preferably North Dublin Area but will bring it wherever to get the right job done

    Thanks!

I'll be your banker on this one. If you don't get sorted locally, I can do it for ya. Sounds like a 2 min job although I'd like to see a pic of the hole to make sure there's no obvious issues. (if taking a pic inc a ruler)
I'm on the SS btw. Off M50

I can't help but I'm just saying it is nice for someone to offer.
Any cross-threading is a nightmare and a panic.
I lost a bolt out of a cycling shoe. I think I walked it out (if that makes sense.) I got a tap and die set from Lidl for €10 which was good enough to fix it.

1.618, thanks for your kind offer.

Will get the photo's this morning. Just one thing about this is, it's an octalink BB so its reverse threaded on the side which has become cross threaded, do you think you could still be able to re-tap it?

    Octalink BB eh ?

Had a quick Google of that and its not something I would be happy doing. Large, very fine threads and possibly L/hand too (^ "reverse threaded").
If you can ID the 'pitch' of the thread a thread file may help to clean it up.

Sorry to get your hopes up but you're back to square one. I'd say its a cycle shop only. Best of luck with it.

How far did you go? If it's only the first few threads, you migh be able to get away with cleaning it up.
A decent shop should have a facing set.
I've done mine a few times with Steven in Outdoor Escape using this tool, but Mullingar might be a bit far.

Whats the BB shell width? Easy way to figure out if it's italian/British threading.

    I'd hazard a guess that it's British threading. That's 1.37"x24tpi

EDIT: and one of them will be a reverse thread too :P

what you need to do is get an older steel bottom bracket the threads on the bottom will recut the shell ,just make certain sure you get it started spot on dont bull into it, when it gets tight unscrew a wee bit at a time .;)

    Thanks for all the replies!

@1.618: No probs, I appreciated your offer! I assumed you had some standard tooling but I think I'll need a bike shop with the park tool, assume somewhere like cycleways or somewhere big like that has one.

@Explosive_Cornflake: I think its only the starting couple of threads, I was hoping I could find a bike shop with the park tool refacing tool that would give it a try. I love the bike so if I can't find someone in Dublin it might be a case of Mullingar here I come

@BX_19: It's one of these that was currently installed:- http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34653 Mine is 68x118, So I guess the shell width it 68mm? Does that tell you if its British threading or not? What's significant about the threading type?

@feck_sake_lads: Thanks for the suggestion, believe me that idea has crossed my mind! I'm currently looking at a less crude way of doing this but I may try that at some stage in the future

If I find a dublin shop that has the re-facing/re-tapping tool I'll let people on here know. I cant be the first person this has happened to!

Another thought on this, I was thinking if the threading is beyond saving I could use a press-fit BB, I'd probably have to change the chainring and cranks but it might be the next most economically viable option if I can't get this re-tapped. Has anyone any experiences with the press-fit BB's? Any reason I couldnt do this?

British threading is the most common threading so that's good. If the threading is totally goosed if fairly sure you could bore it out to an Italian thread fit (British BBs are smaller in diameter then Italian threaded BBs), but that is a last resort.

PM holyboy on here, he runs Bee Cycles near dolphins barn, he should be able to sort you out.

Thanks for the advice! I tried PM'ing HolyBoy there but his inbox is full! :-)

I'll call Bee Cycles tomorrow and see what they can do!

There is also such a thing as a "threadless" bb bracket which screws in to itself rather than frame. I've used this on a few frames with knackered threads.
