How any haulier remains in business with the costs of fuel, tax and Insurance I do not know. You wouldn't get rich that's for sure.

We run mostly Daf 65 18t rigids and on a good run ya might get 20l/100km in towns on multidrop its closer to 30l/100km

As long as you can get a back load its not too bad. running trucks and trailers empty is a killer

Wow those single digit trucking MPG figures are insane. Has any Irish truckers ever gone down the LPG or CNG route? You would often see lorries in Thailand and South East Asia fitted with a rack and about eight large cylindrical tanks of Compressed Natural Gas. With current Diesel prices I'm sure it would save truckers lots of money.

I've never heard of any LPG instalations in trucks.
CNG is possible to use of course. In my hometown in Poland there is quite a few city buses powered by CNG.

8mpg is max and Marcedes is most economical truck .

Some use Bio-diesel and rapeseed oil among other more alien types of fuel .

I haven't seen any LPG in trucks myself either. CNG is non existent in Ireland and LPG has around 40 - 50 outlets. Many trucks in Thailand is running on CNG though.

I understand for Diesel engines that the gas is fed in at a 50:50 mix and that it increases horsepower alot. Some people also drill into the block and retrofit spark plugs essentially converting the Diesel to a high compression sparked petrol type engine.

Yes mercedes are generally thought of as the most fuel efficient but figures like that are rarely achieved outside of the testing facility. 5-6 mpg is good for a mercedes with a load.

A few trucks I know had biodiesel kits fitted and proved to work very well, cooking oil is good too but you still need diesel to start and shut down the engine as the unheated cooking oil gets very thick and will clog up the system.

Tax is based on weight am you must remembe that artic trailers need to be taxed too. Insurance is usually a fleet type policy if the haulier has more than one truck, I'm reliably informed its anywhere from a grand up.

Trailers do not need to be taxed also the most economical truck is a Scania 420..

Exactly my example was of this country running between the major cities. A 560 would be the ideal horse for spanish work..

Trailers do need to be DOE tested.

Generally I find the higher the BHP the more economical the truck.
