I have a 60GB phat PS3 (HDD replaced of course) which I got many years of enjoyment from. It gave up the ghost one day with the YLOD and so sat under the TV unused for about 2 years as we were saving every cent to buy a house. About 2 months ago I finally got it fixed in GSM solutions on Abbey street only...... for it to suffer from the YLOD again last night. I'm pretty peeved, especially as it turns out they only give a 1 month warranty on their work...... which cost about €80.

Worst of all, I was lazy and never backed up my game files.... stupid stupid me. Is there any hope I can bring it back to them and argue that it didn't last a reasonable amount of time?

I think you should have known it wasn't going to last when they only gave you 1 months warranty.

Unless it was re-balled, it was never going to last long anyway.

I'm afraid I assumed a reasonably well known shop, a not insignificant amount of money and the fact it took them nearly two weeks that it would indeed be re-balled. I had mentioned that this is what I thought needed doing.

Oh well, I'll never go there again for anything. Would you be able to recommend anywhere that I can get it fixed semi-permanently?

Sounds like it was reflowed, if even. And you were overcharged for it too. Most places offering a reball offer at least six months warranty with it, some even offer a year

You can take out the harddrive

You can take out the harddrive

But everything on it will be encrypted to the original console & unuseable in another

Can anyone recommend a place in Dublin that will fix it properly?

Unfortunately Gsm solutions.ie have a history of complaints and a history of ripping off people on boards.ie.

I'd firstly post in the consumer forum and see if they can advise you on whether you have any grounds for a complete refund. There is a console modding forum here which has boards members who may help you fix or recommend where to get fixed after.

Did they give you any proper invoice detailing what exact work they claimed to have done?

Many thanks for that. I stated when I went in that I thought it needed a re-ball. When I collected it and asked what had been done, they said they'd replaced the motherboard. Not being up on these things I didn't know if that was 'better' than a re-ball or not.
