Just saw this on a sign heading up Stocking Lane earlier on. There's similar on the Cruagh side just before the viewpoint. Might be useful to know for anyone planning mid-week spin or this day week. Dunno if "closed" means a bike won't get past or not.

So it's from the viewpoint to the 1st right turn.

    6 days....hmm....let's hope it's a full re-surfacing job.

BTW. Nice to see all those roads named correctly on that map. I've always wondered where Stocking lane became Kilakee road, and then became Military rd. I'm still no wiser though.

Just posted the same thing and then saw it was already here. Ah well. Lot of gravel up by lough Bray as well, caution advised.

The map says "Military Road or Kilakee Road" for what I have always thought to be Kilakee Road (I thought Military Road started after the junction with Cruagh Road). But it also says "Killakee Road aka Cruagh Lane" (is the different spelling of Killakee significant?) for a road that I don't even know. I'm (more) confused Ted.

Interestingly the "military road" in Dungarvan is also closed until sometime in november if anyones interested.

will give people a chance to try out the glassamucky climb instead. A great old climb. Tougher than either approach to Kilakee IMO

Good to see, the roads around there have really improved in the last few years. Wish Wicklow CoCo would do their section of the Military Road.

I thought the surface on that section of military road is quite good already? It's the Wicklow side that needs the work

There is a section between the car park at Kilakee and Piperstown Road which hasn't been resurfaced in a few years. There is the odd pothole on it.

It'll be a lovely descent with a tailwind if they do it the whole way down! I was always a bit more nervous towards the bottom due to the couple of potholes or uneven bits!

As I came down past Lough Bray quickly this morning a faint memory of your warning sprang to mind. The thought "I wonder where the gravel is" passed through my head just as I approached a left bend in the road, with a car on the other side and a high mound of gravel in my direct line. I just managed to straighten the bike up and cut through the edge of the mound rather than the centre of it. Even then it was a bit of an effort to keep the bike upright and pick a safe line for the next bend.

What kind of stupidity is it that says that it is okay to throw down a shed load of gravel on a descent, at a point where it only becomes visible moments before you hit it, without even so much as a warning sign? Bah!

Apparently the Military road runs from the Yellow House in Rathfarnham to Aughavannagh, and includes the Killakee road among others. Cruagh lane is the cul de sac off Cruagh Road, with the cemetery on the corner.

Not exactly a scattering of gravel either, more of a deep mound. The whole hill will probably be covered in bits of it as it scatters over the coming week. I'd assumed this was going to be the location of much needed repairs, as per the signage earlier, but no such luck.

I have this book: http://ashfieldpress.ie/view/?id=6 Makes for excellent reading. I was dispensing history lessons on my Saturday spin. :) Actually, now that I think of it, we rode pretty much the entire length of the historical Military Road, passing the old barracks at Drumgoff and Aughavannagh.
