I am looking to get a new alarm for my Pug 106.

Was onto a place in cork that recommended a Meta system - 240 installed.
I don't have much experience of alarms, apart from knowing that Clifford are very good, but expensive, and nobody in cork does them. :(

Any recommendations - I only want to spend around 300 ish

If you go down the route of buying one and installing it yourself, do not be tempted by the cheap remote start types you can buy on ebay. Buy a recognised brand.
Those cheap ones will do your head in.

For what purpose do you want an alarm?

    Sirio - an italian make
    Clifford - the best really
    Cobra - fairly good alarms

Why wouldn't anyone want a alarm on their car?

Car alarms don't seem to be as popular as they were 20 years ago. Everyone was getting them installed on their new cars back then. Now that all cars have immobilisers from the factory many don't bother with alarms now.

I was wondering what the poster thinks car alarms are for in asking what the op wanted it for.

Guys - you got me wrong.
I was genuinely asking for what reason OP wanted to fit alarm into his car?

Alarms might play very different roles, starting from just fake flashing red light pretending to be an alarm, to very advanced complicated vehicle protection system, which will do everything to stop a thief even after he already managed to steal a car and drove off.

That's the reason of my question.

I want it to stop oppournituistic thieves stealing my car.

My pug is not too strong on anti theft features compared to more modern cars so I want it to be harder to steal.

At the same time I'm not going to spend the value of the car in a system because imo if someone really wants it they will take it.

OK, I'm not the car protection expert or anything near it, but here's my opinion...

Generally no matter what alarm you will fit, if someone really wants to steal you car - they will.
Nearly all modern cars (probably including your 106) are equipped with immobileiser, which is great protection against teenage joyrider style thiefs. Any reasonable alarm you can fit, will do the same as immobileiser - stop amateur thief from stealing your car. But assuming you already have got immobileiser, there's very little point in adding alarm in this case.
No alarm will protect you against professionalls, as those guys generally know all the kinds of alarms and know who to work them around in seconds.

What the average alarm might be useful is general vehicle protection. It might prevent someone stealing your car stereo. It might prevent them stealing your wallet which you just left inside. It might prevent kids playing football nearby from hitting your car with the ball, as they will know that harder hit will triger on the siren and wake up all the neighbours. And that's about it.

When it comes to vehicle protection from theft, there is other way - usually cheaper and better than most alarms.
Something untypical. Even a simple protection, but invented randomly and well hidden.
For example a little electrical switch hidden somewhere which would turn off some important circuit without which engine won't be able to start. If you install it wisely, that it's hard to find and diagnose - even the best professional thief won't steal your car. For very easy reason - they know all typical alarms offered by alarm manufacturers, as they can work on them beforehand to know who to trick them on the spot when stealing cars. But when proctetion is not typical, no thief will stay for half an hour in the car to diagnose and find this protection.

So in my opinion - cheapest alarm to prevent teenage scumbags from stealing your stereo or kicking your car, and then some really untypical simple protection (which must be done by someone smart enough) to prevent car from being stolen by professionals. That's the way to go.

On top of an immoboliser, I have:

    Steering Lock
High grade chain, mounted to the floor (behind the seat) through the steering wheel and through the steering lock. This is then locked in with a high grade padlock.
    Handbrake/Gearstick lock
    Disconnected battery.

This means that visibly, its going to take longer to take it. On top of that, if they do get through all the above, they still need to reconnect the battery. If they do that, they still then need to bypass the immoboliser. On top of that they then need to figure out how to start it without stalling it (seperate item in the car!)

A visible deterrent is far better than a secret alarm, where the damage can be done first, before the alarm goes off.

I wouldnt be too fond of falcons. I used to supply and fit them a few years ago and stopped due to the amount of returns I was sending back with issues. There basically a cheap ebay spec Chinese alarm and I would avoid if possible.

Having fitted also fitted cliffords there the only alarm i'll still use on my car. If your anyway open minded the likes of an arrow 5.1 is easy to install and comes with fitting instructions and can be bought online easily enough.

I'd also reccomend cobra and toad alarms, both around a long time and reputable systems.

I'd recommend cobra, I have a basic enough one on my car. It has two window sensors (i drive a 2 door) and a g shock sensor in the alarm unit.
It was cheap enough, I didn't fit it as I'm useless with electronics but I had a local indy mechanic fit it for a cost of 60.
I've never once had any problems with it except the battery die in the key fob.
The key fob itself is basic with two nononsense buttons. A panic button and a slightly bigger lock/unlock button.
The alarm is loud without being to loud and it's not overly sensitive.
I lock it and I get a single flash of the indicators with a single chirp from the unit. I unlock it and I get the same except x2.

    Hope that helps you out.

Cheers for the info, I had pretty much ruled out Clifford because of price, but the arrow 5.1 is cheaper than I thought.
    I may give it a shot :)

I got a Viper alarm fitted by MDS a few months ago. They were great to deal with, and good price too.
