Prometheus-style reboot of Cronenberg's The Fly?

The Fly is my favourite horror film of all time. In the last couple of years, David Cronenberg has alluded to a potentially returning to his film, but in a manner which was neither a sequel nor remake. In 2011 he said
"I have written a script that is more of a strange lateral, let's say oblique sequel than it is a true sequel, and it's certainly not a remake of the original."

    Then in 2012 he said
"I still had this idea in mind - which no, I won't tell you - and I said to Fox, 'I'll write that idea up because, as I think of it, it could be interesting.' And they were excited about it enough to pay me to write a script. And then for various reasons it kind of got bogged down. I don't know exactly why. It seems now that it's not going to happen."

Although Chris Walas did direct a sequel in 1989, it was pretty dull, despite excellent makeup and special effects. Although I'd prefer if they had always left Cronenberg's film alone - the ending is devastatingly bleak - I much prefer the idea for a reboot as suggested by Cronenberg than a remake à la A Nightmare on Elm Street and the glut of other such films we've had in recent years.

What about a Prometheus style follow-up, a prequel that is "not-a-prequel" at the same time? Does anyone have any suggestions on how this might work?

I don't see how a Prometheus style prequel could work for The Fly. Prometheus itself didn't even work imo, but at least Alien had tonnes of unexplored mythology and back story for them to explore in a prequel where as The Fly is a pretty straight forward story of a science experiment gone wrong.

Sounds like Cronenberg was going for a similarly themed story set in the same universe or something maybe? Could see that working alright, would rather that than a remake/sequel.

Retro actively writing prequels never works well.

One of my favourite horrors(along with The Thing) it's really one that I would like to see left well alone.

When there is talks of some remakes/prequels/sequels it does grave my interest but there are some gems that you just don't want rekindled in any form and this is one of them.

Leave it alone, its still one of the best bodyshock horror movies ever, small scale (there's only like what, 5 people in the main cast?) drama with a horror element. the sequel isnt very good but does have superb special effects (the poor dog :( )

It's an idea that could create a lot of buzz.
