Is it possible to get the irish channels (RTE & TV3) on a free-to-air satalite system?

Yes,(and no) on Ka Sat at 9e, and with a Ka lnb on a 80cm-1m dish,(dependent on where you are) a DVB-S2 (HD) receiver, and then, when you go to all that trouble, no TV3 or 3e.

As excollier says, saorview is a cheaper & better option.

Does soarview need an aerial, it's something I don't have

It does. It'll cost you a tenner odd. And a box for 50€

The aerial installation will cost considerably more than a tenner if you're in a tricky reception area & more again if you have to pay someone to do the work.

Would a normal Freeview box from the North that has RTE 1 and 2 be able to pick up these channels in the Dublin area using a Sky minidish?

No, a Freeview receiver is not a satellite receiver, it is a terrestrial receiver and has to be connected to a UHF aerial. Don't connect it to a sky (or any other satellite) dish, you will just be wasting your time.

Ah right so Freesat will work then?

A Freesat HD receiver with non-Freesat mode (or optional 3rd party firmware, like the Humax Foxsat HD), will work with Saorsat. If you want to include the UK channels, you'll need DiSEqC capability too, which the Humax has. Don't know about other Freesat receivers.

You have a Sky dish ? You are in Dublin according to your profile.

If you want both the UK channels and the Saorview (Irish digital channels) on one box, then I suggest you google Ferguson Ariva 150. It does both sets of channels in one channel list. You connect your existing satellite dish cable and an aerial to it.
