2003 Toyota Celica

For some reason I can't lock the car from the drivers side using the key. Its sounds like it's locking the doors but it doesn't lock them. However if I go around to the passenger door I can lock the doors with the key from there.

Now if I try to unlock the car from the passenger side it sounds like the doors are unlocking but they don't. However if I now go back to the drivers side I can unlock the doors from there.

In short to lock the car with the key I use the driver side and then to unlock I have to use the passenger side. What could be the problem here? Any ideas?
