Any word on UTV +1 coming on satellite ?

ITV1+1 is on both Sky and Freesat across the water.

UTV+1 was available under the add channels feature and non Freesat mode but disappeared around February.

IMO "+1" channels are a waste.

In these days of PVR's I agree.

Some (most) people don't have a pvr.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Let's have a +1 for all channels then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

And +2 as well, actually why is usually +1. +2 or +8 (shift workers or ordinary workers that like Daytime TV) would be more useful.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭excollier

Oh, how I love sarcasm. But it needs to be used correctly to be worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

    Who is being sarcastic?

In my view some of the +1 channels are pointless but the PSB ones have been useful when there's a recording required and both tuners are already in use. Normally recording the +1 program gets around the issue.

I think the +1 channels are a great idea because many of the channels throw their top shows on at the same time to compete for viewers. If you do as I do and record everything to avoid the ads, then having the option of a +1 means that I can avoid a lot of the potential clashes that occur!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 778 ✭✭✭Mr. Rabbit

I can see no reason why UTV +1 and Channel 4 +1 should not be moved off the PSB multiplexes onto the COM multiplexes, and replaced with ITV3 and ITV 4, nationwide.

Surely, that would be a far more acceptable arrangement especially with those infilcted with Freeview Lite relay stations ?

As has been said, in these days of PVRs +1 channels are a waste of spectrum, though they're far better than shopping and porn channels, in my opinion.

Yep, I've found that option useful as well.

Unless you have a dual feed PVR +1s remain a useful feature.

Can someone give a quick summary of what's in the link please?

I don't have the software to open it.

We have also signed a new agreement with the ITV Network which will ensure that UTV HD is introduced on the Sky platform and FreeSat in the first quarter of 2013

Which is contrary to the official announcement of March 5th 2012:

    http://www.u.tv/news/UTV-signs-new-network-deal/d4815924-857b-4d73-b4b5-ec6bc7c1441a
New networking arrangements between UTV and ITV plc will see increased benefits for viewers in Northern Ireland - including UTV HD on Sky and freesat, as well as the current Virgin service, by the end of the year.
We are especially pleased to plan the launch of UTV HD on both Sky and DTT by the end of this year, to complement the existing UTV HD service available to Virgin customers in Northern Ireland.

There is no +1 for Channel Television, so ITV3 replaces ITV1+1 in the Channel Islands. But I don't think UTV would give up their slot for an ITV plc channel, and neither would Channel 4.

In the long run would it even be up to UTV ?

In any case, ITV+1/UTV+1/STV+1 would still have a +1 slot on Freeview, just not on a PSB multiplex. Channel 5+1 is in this position for example.

and remember, ITV 3. and ITV 4 were on the PSB multiplexes up until a couple of years ago when they were moved onto the COM multiplexes and replaced by ITV 1/STV/UTV+1 and Channel 4 +1.

Personally, if I was stuck with Feeeview Lite I'd rather have ITV 3 and ITV 4 than UTV+1 and Channel 4 + 1. There's quite a lot of sport on ITV 4 these days, and both are effectively two extra channels.

The PSB multiplexes are regionalised. Channel 4 +1 is regionalised for advertising purposes alongside the main channel and obviously UTV +1 is regionalised for Northern Ireland as part of the ITV network.

The SDN multiplex only has two variations since Tele G closed down - Wales and Rest of UK. The difference is that in Wales S4C is on the D3&4 mux in place of E4 which is on the SDN mux in Wales. This is a legacy of the decision by the ITC (as it was then) that S4C would have guaranteed space on multiplex A when the DTT network in the UK was originally rolled out.

Both Arqiva multiplexes are the same across the UK with no regional variation.

There are no commercial multiplexes on the Channel Islands, so as the D3&4 multiplex is regionalised there with no time shift of Channel TV, they could add ITV3 in its place. There is no current mechanism in place to 'kick' UTV+1 or Channel 4 +1 to the SDN or Arqiva B multiplex to swap for ITV3 or ITV4.

Bear in mind that before the major retune in Autumn 2009 which seen the launch of Quest and Channel 5 moving from the SDN/MuxA mux to D3&4/Mux2, ITV1 (STV/UTV), ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 were all on the latter multiplex - moving Channel 5 seen ITV sacrifice one slot in exchange while ITV2 +1 also started on D3&4/Mux2 as effectively a place holder for ITV1 +1 being launched in the future. At the time around 100,000 viewers in areas already DSO'd lost ITV3 & ITV4 (although gained Channel 5) and plenty of them were non too happy.

UTV had, as of right, half of their multiplex (the other half going to Channel 4) from 9.25am-6am. I'm not sure whether this has legally changed, but although UTV leased much of its space to other broadcasters, it has held on to space for UTV and UTV+1 and wouldn't want to give any of that up.

During the ITV Digital days, they refused to allow the ITV Sports channel space on their half-multiplex to launch in Northern Ireland.

Dumb ass question: Does this mean it will be on the ROI epg?

    Cheers.
