Thermostat in hallway - why?

I've often wondered why thermostats for heating sytems are usually placed in hallways?

In our house, the hallway is the coldest place in the house and if we were to rely on the thermostat, the heating would hardly ever switch itself off once it reaches 20 deg C.

Would it not be better to have the thermostat in our sitting room which is where we spend a lot of time?

In my house the 2 thermostats are in the warmest rooms, so I find the coldest rooms don't heat up, even though I have the rads turned right down in the warm rooms. It's a catch 22 situation.

Roomstats are one of the most misused forms of heating control technology, if positioned well they are a force for good if positioned incorrectly i.e. above a toaster they are a source of evil:eek:.

Roomstats are traditionally fitted in the hall, in a well balanced system stats can work well, they can be fitted elsewhere, there are pros and cons for different positions but householders normaly adapt to whatever position it's fitted, stats would be kept from sitting rooms traditionally due to secondary sources of heat in a sitting room.

Would I be correct in thinking that a lot of the houses built in Irish housing estates don't have "well balanced system"s :)

    You would.

Thermostats are placed in hallways as they work best in an average heated space. Kitchens could overheat from cooking, living rooms could overheat from fires, etc.
This is for downstairs. Upstairs stat should be placed in the master bedroom to give the average heat for that zone.
