Mother being made redundant at 59

    Hey Guys,

Looking for a bit of clarification for my Mother.

She's 59 and being made redundant, I'm trying to work out what's she entitled too.

    According to the SW website:
If you are under 55 and get a redundancy payment of more than €50,000 you are disqualified from claiming Jobseeker's Benefit. The table below shows how long you may be disqualified for. The length of the disqualification is at the discretion of the deciding officer (who can take your circumstances into account). Any period of disqualification is subtracted from your total Jobseeker's Benefit entitlement. So if you are disqualified for 3 weeks (which is 18 days payment) your JB claim starts on day 19.

Does this mean that as she's 59 she will be entitled to claim JSB regardless of the size of her redundancy lump sum?

    Cheers!

Yep thats exactly what that means! Get her to sign on the first day of her unemployment to ensure she gets sorted out asap. Best of luck to her!

Cheers Mrs Byrne! Trying to get her all the information she needs so I can try and sell it to her as a good thing :D

    Thanks again!

JB is only payable for 9-12 months.

When that is over she could apply for JA, but this is means tested. If she does not qualify for this it is important that she continues to sign as unemployed, as this gets credits (not money) which keep her PRSI record up to date. These credits are important if she should get sick or in terms of getting the old age contributory pension.
