Heat water - gas or electricity

    My apartment is set up as follows;

    1. Gas can heat the water.
    2. Gas can heat the radiators (separate switches and different buttons on timer so they work independently).
    3. Immersion can heat the water.

    My gas boiler is due for a service - but in the mean time - it takes an hour using the gas to heat enough water to have 2 showers. It really needs to be left on for an hour for 1 shower too - temperature. An hour seems quite long.

    Wondering would I be better off using the Electricity immersion to heat my water for a shower. I know electricity is more expensive than gas - but I'm going to start testing it - put it on for a half an hour etc. What temperature should the thermostat be set at, at the bottom of the water tank. And my immersion doesn't have a sink/bath option. It is one of those combi boilers.

    Gas for heating - no problem - it's my only option anyway.

    Anyone got any info?

    Thanks

    It really depends upon the boiler you have. If you have an older gas boiler with a cast iron heat exchanger, them these can take an age to heat up. Your circulating pump may also only be a 5m head and may require a 6m head.
    Overall cost per kwh, natural gas cost approx 6.5 cents per kwh and electricity is approx 20 cents per kwh. Electricity is 100% efficient so it really depends on how efficient your gas boiler is to do a true comparison
