All-star nominees at the banquet

Does anyone know if every all-star nominee goes to the event in Dublin next Friday or is it just the selected teams? It seems a bit awkward to go up only to be told: 'sorry you're not getting an all-star...'

It's an award show, just like any other. There are the nominees and there are winners. Not everyone can win. If only the winners from both codes attended, there would be a mere 30 people in the audience. That's not much of an award show, a dinner or a TV show. Just because they don't win, I imagine that a lot of the attendees appreciate the nominee/invite, as its a very public recognition of the great year that they had.

Everyone should be practising their fake smile and applause for when they don't win. And befuddled I'm not worthy look for when they do win.

Well not really. There aren't too many award shows where you're told the day before that you haven't actually won but shur you might as well turn up anyway:rolleyes::D

But I thought only one team was announced before the ceremony and the other one was announced on the night - alternating each year between the hurling and the football teams

No one is announced the day before and the other announced (to the players) on the day. I won a few quid a few years back as a friend rang me and told me the team, he won one so he was delighted!

+1 to that, at decent odds as well. Bookies have knocked it on the head now from a couple of days before.

Any player can go nominated or not

Sorry for the lack of punctuation. The Bookies close betting now at an earlier time so they're cute enough to know!

Just heard all stars team there

    Paul Durcan

    Keith Higgins
    Ger Cafferkey
    neil Mc gee

    Lee Keegan
    Karl Lacey
    Frank mc Glynn

    Neil Gallagher
    Aidan Walsh

    Mark mcHugh
    Alan Dillon
    Paul Flynn

    Colm Mc Fadden
    Michael Murphy
    colm O neill

    Here's the breakdown:

    8 Donegal
    4 Mayo
    2 Cork
    1 Dublin

Thought Graham Reilly unlucky to loose out to Paul Flynn in half forward line.
    Most of team picked itself

Maybe it is done to get a bit of early publicity for the night itself, but they should name both teams on the night and not one on the day before.

I always remember hearing a story which highlights this issue - I think it was 1985 and the football awards were being announced on the night.

"And the full back award for 1985 goes to Gerry..........

a certain Mr McCarville gets up out of his seat, clearing his throat

    ..........Hargan!"

    sits back down again...... :o

Not sure if that is actually true or urban myth but it always made me laugh.

I don't know, the winners always seem to be handily placed near the front of the stage without having to battle through an ocean of in-laws & hangers on, and you never really catch sight of the other nominees, I reckon they've been given the nod beforehand...

    Lies according to Hargan.

The nominees that didnt win are unlikely to go. I know for a fact one who has been nominated three times, only went once when he was thought he was in with a shot. Not goin tonight either. Free wine or not. :P
