The BBC have said that BBC1 NI HD will replace the existing BBC1 HD on the same EPG number on Sky and that due to something to do with audio description, I don't remember exactly what, BBC1 HD will remain on the EPG, but move to somewhere in the 900's. However I'm guessing that they mean the NI Sky EPG , whether the same will happen on the ROI EPG, I have my doubts. It will be a shame if we are stuck with BBC1 NI only on the EPG, back to Football Focus being rudely interrupted on a Sat afternoon again, night time movies much later at night to make way for NI politics shows etc etc.

Freesat rules! Regional HD is waste of resources for the BBC in my view.

Freesat does, indeed, rule. Been using it for a few years now, (can't fault it) and in addition to that, I am about to get ( at last) faultless Freeview reception. Free HD channels there too, via my Freeview HD receiver. And Saorview.
Oh happy days, superb HD reception on 3 platforms, but precious little quality content.
    There's progress for you.
It could be worse, I could be one of the poor suckers who think that Sky is the only way to watch (fta) TV, and pay extra for the privilege

One hopes all the discussion about different ways to get telly in the last few months will have opened a few eyes to the alternatives.

You would think so, but from those I have helped, many, at this late stage still have no idea.

    How do you mean?

Well I heard one telling a customer that he could receive the "brand new" freeview service from Northern Ireland, I've been using it (in various guises) for around 12 years.
And, yes, he'd get HD tv from Freeview, no problem.

I can't see the need for regional BBC HD, the different regionalised programmes they show don't warrant a seperate HD channel. What HD capacity is left on Astra?

BBC NI, Scotland and Wales produce significant amounts of their own material for regional consumption alongside producing programmes for the whole BBC One network as opposed to the English regions which have news and little else. A BBC blog update a few weeks back also explained that having the three above 'national regions' was more cost effective at the moment that having HD simulcasts of their other channels across their transmission provision on different platforms, particularly DTT. The platform neutrality principle also means that any dedicated channel, SD or HD, needs to be made available across DTT, Satellite and Cable as what can be practically possible. With Freeview HD capacity already "full" for the dedicated multiplex, it may be some time before another HD stream could be launched without either additional multiplexes or transforming one of the current ones.

I watch BBC One NI a fair bit, as a NI resident - am I looking forward to its future HD launch? Yep. Is it a bit of a shame that other BBC channels haven't plans put in yet for HD simulcasts? Yep. But the BBC One 'Nations HD' plans have been in place now for a while and the beeb themselves are having to make cuts elsewhere to save money. Once BBC HD eventually becomes BBC Two HD, I hope that some of the current output on other BBC stations will gain access to the BBC Two schedule for repeats in due course especially as they're talking about drastically reducing BBC Two's own output hours.

I am sure there will be plenty with the new satellite going up soon.

I can't see the need for regional BBC HD, the different regionalised programmes they show don't warrant a seperate HD channel.
When the BBC originally started out on the Astra 2A satellite, their SD output was available as four different versions for three different channels - BBC 1 with a "UK Today" programme in place of regional news for English viewers, and and the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish versions. Same went for BBC 2 except that there was very little difference between the English regions on that channel anyway save for some Rugby League highlights in a few of them. BBC Choice as it was then also had four separate versions - England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Eventually after a few years the regional versions were closed and became one UK-wide channels before it became BBC Three.

The new 'national regions' HD versions of BBC One is simply history repeating itself.
What HD capacity is left on Astra?
Transmission capacity should be upgraded when 2F eventually comes into service, probably by late November or December. It's testing ATM at 43.5 east. One issue is that the BBC need the UK (and Ireland) spot beams for their general programming and so are limited to broadcasting on 1N at present. They just closed their last 2A transponder which in return they are now using a 1N transponder to give themselves two DVB-S2 transponders for HD content. With their current transponder configurations 4-5 HD streams should be possible per transponder leaving some spare potential capacity available. How they could use that is anyones guess, a possible sub-let to ITV maybe?

Personally, I will be glad when BBC1 NI and UTV are both HD on both platforms, of the main channels only Channel 5 will be missing then.

Has BBC1 NI HD appeared yet on the SKY EPG in NI ? And if so, how come it hasn't replaced the England BBC1 HD that we have on the ROI EPG ? ( not that I am looking for it, I hope we get to keep the England region one we have )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭blueser

Never watch BBC1 NI anyway; it's of no relevance to me whatsoever. Plus, I hate the way they cut off the final score service from London for their own results on saturday evening (I understand why they do it, just don't like it). Also, there does sometimes be a fairly decent programme on after the 10 o'clock news, but it'll invariably get shunted back 30-45 minutes for some regional programme If it does come in, I'll simply watch Any time I watch a regional news programme now I watch Northwest Tonight as I was born and raised in sunny (ha!) Manchester.

BBC 1 HD Scotland and Wales now testing? This is from Satellites.co.uk forum.

Almost certainly for BBC1 HD Scotland & BBC1 HD Wales.

    They can be found on 11023H 23000 2/3 DVB-S2 8PSK tagged as 8901 / 8911

These cannot be added to Sky boxes as they are DVB-S2
