So, let's assume VRT is going up in the Budget in December.

If I order/pay a deposit for a brand new car now, for January delivery, will I have to pay the new, higher rate of VRT that will be in force in January when the car is delivered?

If yes, can I get around that by paying for the car in full now, but still have it delivered in January?

I'm pretty sure VRT is charged at time of getting the registration plate. Could be just the change to the motor tax rates going up, can't see them hitting VRT on new cars, they make a nice few quid out of this and sales are declining at the moment. Countries like ourselves who are finished such as Spain recently announced a scrappage deal, gives quick cash to the country from people buying new.

Yes you will get hit with the VRT increase if the car is delivered in 2013.

No, you can't pay now to get around it. VRT is charged on the day the car is registered, at whatever that rate is on the day.

Can garages not register cars before the new year and just not release them?

Yes but they would have a 12 plate

People will prefer to buy a 2013 car than a 2012, thats the thing.

I could be wrong... But im pretty sure registering the car before the new year even if its not released would result in having an old number plate aswell! ie. a 2012 instead of a new 2013 plate. not sure if anyone would want that if they're buying new for 2013.

Obviously. But what I meant was that its registered for 2013. For years there has been people with newly registered cars collecting them on New Years day, when the VRO is closed.

Ive ordered a car for 2013. And every dealer i got a quote from explained on the quote that the final price will be subject to the new vrt changes for 2013 and I had to sign with the garage I finally ordered from saying I accepted this. None of the garages i got a quote from are open on Jan 1st! I wish they were... Id get my car earlier then! :)

Thanks for all the replies. Much clearer now. Father in law is about to buy a car & I'm trying to convince him to wait for January delivery. He's worried about the price going up by a grand or two due to VRT changes, I'm more concerned about the depreciation on a Nov/Dec 12-reg car if he tries to trade it in a couple of years.

I asked the same question to a few dealers. I was worried about car going up a grand or 2. Now of course you can take dealers explanations with a pinch of salt as they are trying to sell you something. However, after speaking with a few the general concensus I received was that (although they couldnt gaurantee this) it at max should only be a few hundred and not the grand or 2 i was asking about. a couple dealers said to expect at highest a few hundred if that. So im just left with my fingers crossed!

They have comuters nowadays. Wonderful things I believe :D

Registering is mainly done on-line in a matter of seconds as long as the vehicle stat code is correct.

Some main dealers pre book regs to get ahead of the the possie, but are not allocated to vehicles until they are delivered/sold.
