Portable hotspot for infrequent roaming

    Hi
What would be my best option for getting a hotspot I could use when roaming in UK/France infrequently. Would need to be prepay sim so I could top-up when going abroad. Have a contract with meteor and they charge €20 for 50mb so anything better would be good.
Would I be best buying a mifi outright and buying a local sim?
    Thanks.

Your problem is that any MiFi device you get here is likely to be locked to one service provider so it might not work for you in France with a diffferent SIM.

I'm sure there is at least one Boards member that does just what you are asking about as I've read a few posts about roaming in France and getting a SIM there so you could search the Midband and Talk to forums for France and see what comes up?

Various Mifi units turn up quite a bit on adverts.ie. The Huawei E585 E586 etc.. as the subsidised sale price to the customer is low, the resale value of them is equally low. Think about buying second hand.

As it stands, it is very easy to unlock the units with the likes of DC Unlocker.

Roaming, I've posted this link up a few times.

Three UK have prepaid Data SIMs that have a good shelf life, you can buy a few on Amazon and keep them around until needed. Use, then dispose.

Just an example, I'm not endorsing this link at all:

    3 - 1GB Prepaid Data SIM: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Broadband-Preloaded-Mobile-Devices/dp/B0047GJI9W/

There's various other Data package sizes if you search Amazon.
