The new survey on Irelands best towns has thrown up some surprising results

At number 15 Tullamore ( this has to be a joke)
At number 26 Athlone ( surprising that it did'nt make the top 15);)
At Number 66 Mullingar (surprising that it got so high, well done to all ):D

Athlone scored high on pubs and restaurants, but low on streetscape.

    Why?

I think I recall Martin1 chipping in on a thread on Mullingar after the Nevin-connected riots. IIRC he was a big Athlone fan and hard on Mullingar. Maybe I'm wrong but I can check.
Or was it re the Longford festival coming to Tullamore? I will check.

At any rate, Tullamore is known far & wide as being superior to any of the towns near it, including Athlone or Mullingar. Its safer, cleaner, more compact, better planned. This objective study is icing on the cake to those in the know already.

It depends what criteria you use I suppose. If I want to go shopping for something other than bog standard groceries, it's Athlone I head to because it has a better selection of shops. In terms of a town centre, Tullamore's certainly more compact but a lot of shops have gone out to Cloncollig. The old Texas department store and the old Quinnsworth/Tesco are starting to look pretty decrepit.

Tullamore is suffering a lot at the moment I would be surprised if they made top 20 now
