Energy Upgrade Savings

    The scenario:
2003 dormer rural one-off dwelling which is in an exposed site poorly insulated and draught-proofed got an energy upgrade in Jan 2011. This involved cavity walls being pumped, attic insulated, high efficiency oil boiler and zoned heating controls. DHW also now run off oil rather than electricity. I also did alot of draught sealing at opes etc. And finally a small stove was installed.

After much looking over usage figures incredibly we are now using 67% of both electricity and oil pre-upgrade. That's 500L oil and 1,600kWh of electricity saved per year. That works out at €500 for the oil and €240 for electricity giving an annual saving of €740. Not factored into this is the fuel cost for the stove.

Fuel for the stove came to no more than €200 for the year, and probably more like €150.

so thats an assumption of €900 for the first year, id put probably a 7% per annum increase on that figure.

what did you spend on the upgrade and what do you determine your payback period as?

also, and more importantly, does your home feel more cosy than previously?

I'm afraid it's ~€600pa as the fuel for the stove is an extra expense. Believe it or believe it not I haven't the capital costs (less grant) for the upgrade off the top of my head, despite the expense involved.

Your last question is very valid. The house feels a lot more comfortable. Its an exposed site and previously on a windy cold day (didn't need to be freezing) you couldn't heat the house. Never mind feeling warm, on such a day with the heating on constant the house still felt cold. Now for winter the timers are set for around 3 periods of 1hr each day with a bit longer for the evening i.e. ~4hrs per day. The benefit of the stove is we now use our sitting room in winter! And we don't tend to have a blazing fire, its real benefit is the constant radiant heat for upto 12-24hrs. That gets us over the worst of the windy wintery days;).

So to summarise a definite cost saving with a much improved living environment. I'll look up on the capital costs at some stage in order to work out the pay-back period.
